Endeavour star Roger Allam has teased that there could be a death in the detective drama's upcoming finale.

The Inspector Morse prequel - which focuses on the early career of Endeavour Morse (Shaun Evans) - is coming to an end after a decade.

And the star, who plays DI Fred Thursday in the series, hinted that it could go out with a bang.

Appearing on ITV's Lorraine, Allam said it felt "momentous" shooting his final scenes as the character, who he first played in the pilot back in 2012.

"It has been a long time," he said, saying there were times filming his final scenes when he was "close to tears".

Dropping a few hints about the ending, he said: "The mystery has always been for the fans why John Thaw's Morse never mentions a man called Fred Thursday. So there has to be some kind of explanation of that. A final parting of the ways.

"Possibly even a death..."

Allam, 69, also said he thought it was "right to finish now".

"I like things that have a beginning, a middle and an end," he said.

"So that's a good thing.

"But nonetheless, of course I will miss it.

"I will miss playing the character... but most of all I will miss meeting with that lovely group of regular characters that we've had over all these years.

"And most of all working with Shaun."
