Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Prince William Turn Wimbledon Into a Watch Exhibit

Losing sucks, especially an epic five-hour match only a tiebreaker could decide—like the one Roger Federer lost last weekend at Wimbledon. And while Fed’s endorsement deal with Rolex no doubt influenced his decision to almost immediately put on his Day-Date in the painful moments of defeat, maybe it was something of a salve, too. Things can’t be all bad with a gold Rolex Day-Date on your wrist, right? Meanwhile, the match’s winner Novak Djokovic wore a simpler Seiko—who needs bling when hoisting up an already golden trophy? World-class watches were everywhere this week, from the grassy carpet of Wimbledon to the Lion King premiere’s red carpet.

Roger Federer’s Rolex Day-Date

Last year, Roger Federer’s on-court appearance underwent a dramatic change, as he switched sponsors from Nike to Uniqlo. One thing has remained the same, though: Fed is still a Rolex man through and through, and his Day-Date is fittingly classic piece for a historically classic player.

Prince William’s Omega Seamaster

Prince William’s Omega Seamaster is the future king’s trusty sidekick. He’s kept the same watch on his wrist for years, and even married Kate Middleton with the piece on. It’s no ordinary Seamaster, though: Williams’ mode comes with a “Blue Wave” dial that looks like tides running across the face of the watch.

Novak Djokovic’s Seiko Astron GPS Solar

Rafael Nadal wears zany Richard Mille pieces during play. Federer is a longtime Rolex ambassador. But flashy watches aren’t for everyone. Case in point: Novak Djokovic. After Sunday’s match, Djokovic put a practical $2,100 Seiko on his wrist. Djokovic would probably argue that his watch was the second-most-important piece of hardware he took home on Sunday, though.

Anthony Davis’s Richard Mille RM-011 Felipe Massa Boutique Edition

Anthony Davis is turning into a Watch Guy before our eyes. Last week, he wore the Rolex Rainbow Daytona, and during the press conference announcing his signing with the LA Lakers, the big man wore an extremely limited Richard Mille. The RM-011 model was originally made for racer Felipe Massa, and Davis’s is a 1-of-50 piece made to commemorate the launch of a Richard Mille boutique in America. The watch is mostly identical to the regular RM-011, with one dramatic tweak: a titanium case traded out for an 18-carat rose-gold one.

Elton John’s Special-Edition Rolex Daytona

We could feel the love tonight on the red carpet at the UK premiere of The Lion King. Meet cutes abounded: Beyoncé and Meghan Markle, Jay Z and Prince Harry, Elton John and this freaking watch! It is a very flashy Rolex Daytona rumored to have been released at this year’s BaselWorld festival. The Daytona is tailor-made for racecar drivers, but this piece is perfect for Elton: sapphires running around the bezel and a mother-of-pearl dial with diamonds filling in as hour markers make a perfect fit with his glitzy personal style.

Christian Combs’s Custom Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

What kind of watch do you wear when you’re Diddy’s son? The wildest one you can find, it seems. New York-based jewelry store Avianne & Co. covered the case of Christian Combs’s Royal Oak in diamonds and then switched out the bracelet for two Cuban-link chains. It is an outrageous piece of wristwear.
