Roger White's teaching career ends on a sweet note
May 17—Most people, when they retire, will not get a sendoff from a theater full of hundreds, multiple live bands, dedication of a scholarship in their name and have a day named after them. But most people in Hoquiam, especially those at the 7th Street Theater on Saturday, will tell you that after more than 30 years of teaching, Roger White deserved every bit of that, and more.
Students and alumni held a retirement celebration for White, longtime band teacher at Hoquiam High. Over 200 band students, parents, family and friends remained masked and responsibly distanced for the gathering. When White entered stage right and Production Director Tamara Helland walked him onto the stage, the room erupted with applause.
White's three children each spoke, followed by fellow teachers and students, then a video presentation by Maine Digital Media, and presentation of a band scholarship in his name. Find details on the Roger White Band Fund scholarship at the Grays Harbor Community Foundation at gh-cf.org
Earlier that day Hoquiam Mayor Ben Winkelman signed a proclamation declaring May 15 as Roger White day.
