Will Rogers World Airport looks to offer direct international flights

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – Will Rogers World Airport (WRWA) is looking to provide direct international flights to and from Oklahoma City.

According to WRWA, the Oklahoma City Airport Trust has released documents detailing the construction of a Federal Inspection Station at the airport. The international gate will be handled by Customs and Border Protection and is anticipated to open by the end of 2024.

“This project will bring non-stop international flights to Oklahoma City,” Director of Airports Jeff Mulder said. “This will raise our profile as a community and provide a great amenity for our residents and visitors.”

Officials say the terminal expansion finished in 2021 included a gate and boarding bridge to allow for international flights. This portion will be built on the lower level of the terminal were international travelers will be cleared for entry into the United States.

The estimated cost for the Federal Inspection Station is $12 million and will be paid for by Airport revenues.

The airport says over the past year, airport employees have met with airlines to recruit them for the new service. Targeted markets include flights to Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America.

WRWA also noted that OKC is home to a Mexican consulate and a Guatemalan consulate.

“Non-stop International flights to leisure destinations will give our customers a better travel experience,” Mulder said. “We also have a growing population of residents from Mexico and Central America who live in Central Oklahoma that will benefit from these flights.”
