Roland-Story moves forward with good conduct review committee, sets first meeting

The timeline for a committee to review and suggest changes to the Roland-Story school district's good conduct policy for students has not changed, but there is a clearer sense of who will be part of that effort.

The committee is being formed after a high school athlete was allowed to continue wrestling in 2022 after he was charged with felony assault.

The current student handbook's policy on students' off-campus behavior leaves room for some actions to not trigger disciplinary action, unless those behaviors "directly affect the good order, efficiency, management and welfare of the school."

Superintendent Matt Patton said the plan for the committee is still to hold its first meeting in June, propose an updated draft of policy to share with the school's attorney and then get school board approval over the summer in time for the start of the 2023-2024 school year.

"The district’s goal is to make necessary changes to help ensure that those students who may violate policy are held accountable to the fullest extent possible when conduct violates the district’s norms and expectations," Patton said in a previous statement.

Patton recommended the committee include two parents of middle or high school students, four head coaches, one school board member, the high school/middle school activities director, and high school principal.

Board members began to discuss a couple of people who they said have already expressed an interest in serving on the committee, but there's not yet been any formal announcements.
