Roland-Story sports round-up: No. 3 Norse boys suffer first loss after falling to No. 1 GVC

The Class 2A No. 3 Roland-Story boys basketball team was dealt its first loss of the season Jan. 12 with an 85-67 setback against a Grand View Christian team ranked No. 1 in 1A.

The game was part of a busy week for the Norsemen, who defeated Southeast Valley (86-38) Jan. 9 at Gowrie, South Hamilton (74-43) in Jewell Jan. 10 and Greene County (72-48) Friday at Story City in going to 11-1 overall and 8-0 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

The Roland-Story girls basketball team snapped a five-game losing streak Friday with at 60-25 victory over Greene County. The victory put the Norse at 7-6 overall and 6-2 in the HOIC.

The Norse girls fell to Southeast Valley (51-45), South Hamilton (64-55) and Clear Lake (58-31) in their other three games during the week.

The Roland-Story wrestling team defeated Nevada (42-24) and fell to Boone (60-24) in a double-dual at Story City Jan. 12. The Norsemen placed eighth out of 10 teams with 51 points at the Tiger Invitational in Adel Saturday.

Here is what we learned from a busy week of action for Roland-Story high school athletics.

Poor shooting dooms Norsemen in loss to No. 1 Thunder

The presence of 7-foot GVC center Daniel Tobiloba and 6-9 forward Emiliano Barrantes proved to be two much for the Roland-Story boys to overcome against the No. 1 Thunder.

Tobiloba blocked five shots and altered several others in helping GVC hold Roland-Story to 32.5% shooting from the field. He also had 14 points and 18 rebounds and Barrantes also posted a double-double with 16 points and 15 boards.

Despite GVC's intimidating inside presence Roland-Story still evened the Thunder on the boards with both teams recording 46 rebounds. Roland-Story also made 11 3-pointers.

Jonovan Wilkinson had 22 points and nine rebounds for Roland-Story in the loss. Dillon Lettow and Boaz Clark combined for 26 points off the bench for the Norsemen, with Lettow scoring 14 points and Clark finishing with 12 plus six rebounds and five assists.

Luke Patton added 5 points and 10 rebounds and Isaiah Naylor 7 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Norsemen.

Roland-Story rebounded from the loss with an impressive performance versus Greene County. The Norsemen led 27-13 at the half and outscored the Rams 24-15 in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Patton dominated inside against Greene County with 19 points, 17 rebounds and three blocks. Ben Greenfield added 14 points and seven rebounds, Wilkinson posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards, added three assists and four steals, Lettow and Clark both scored 9 points and Naylor added 5.

Roland-Story opened the week with an amazing performance versus Southeast Valley. The Norsemen built a huge 61-21 lead at the half and coasted to victory.

Patton had 16 points, 16 rebounds, four assists and three blocks and steals apiece to lead a balanced Roland-Story attack against Southeast Valley. Naylor had 14 points and four steals, Wilkinson 11 points, eight assists and four steals, Greenfield 11 points, six rebounds and three assists and Clark 10 points.

The Norsemen used a big second half to dispose of South Hamilton. They outscored the Hawks 41-21 over the final two quarters.

Wilkinson went for 17 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals against South Hamilton. Patton tallied 12 points, 11 rebounds and four assists and steals apiece, Kale Lande finished with 12 points and four rebounds, Naylor had 10 points and four assists and Greenfield 8 points, five rebounds and four steals.

Norse girls get needed victory over Greene County

The Roland-Story girls dominated Greene County from the start Friday to break out of its slump.

The Norse sewed up the victory early. They led 24-4 after the first quarter and maintained a 19-point lead at the half.

Claire Truesdell and Madi Bauer combined for 34 points in the win. Truesdell had 18 points and three rebounds and Bauer 16 points, five rebounds, five steals and two assists.

Elizabeth Ihle and Alyssa Jones both added 8 points. Ihle also had two assists and four steals and Jones four rebounds and three steals.

Kamryn Lande finished with six rebounds, four assists and 2 points. Kate Berggren pulled down eight boards, dished out four assists and scored 2 points.

Roland-Story began the week with a with a tough loss to Southeast Valley. The Norse led 13-6 after one quarter, but they couldn't maintain their edge after being held to 25.4% shooting from the field, committing 16 turnovers and only forcing 11.

Bauer hit five 3-pointers and went for 19 points in a losing effort. Truesdell tallied 11 points and four steals, Berggren 7 points and eight rebounds, Ihle eight assists and Jones 5 points.

The Norse were outclassed in the second half during their loss to South Hamilton. After taking a 28-20 lead at the break they were outscored 44-27 over the final two quarters.

Free throws made the difference in the game. South Hamilton got to the line 40 times, making 26, and Roland-Story only attempted six free throws.

Jones had a huge game off the bench in a losing effort. She finished with 21 points and nine rebounds.

Berggren posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards and Lande had 8 points and five rebounds. Truesdell chipped in 6 points and four rebounds and Bauer 5 points and six boards.

In the loss to Clear Lake the Norse never found their rhythm on offense. They shot just 27.3% from the field compared to the Lions' 52.5% shooting display and were also outrebounded, 29-22.

Truesdell scored 11 points and Lande had 8 points and three rebounds versus Clear Lake. Ihle chipped in 5 points and four rebounds.

Four Norse wrestlers place at Adel

The Roland-Story wrestling team sent four wrestlers to the Tiger Invitational and they all placed in the top five Saturday.

Hayden Eslick led the way by coming in second at 106 pounds. Eslick pinned Dallas Center-Grimes' Logan Renshaw in 40 seconds and Waukee Northwest's Tanner Draheim in 1:58 to reach the finals, where he lost by fall to Adel-Desoto-Minburn's Carter Madison.

Thomas Tjaden took third at 220 for Roland-Story. Tjaden lost by fall to Red Oak's Sam Fields, pinned Waukee Northwest's Isaiah Moody in 4:36, stuck Ames' Sebastian Molina in 3:29 then won a rematch with Fields in the third-place match by pinning him in 55 seconds.

Jaxson Kadolph (195) and Aaron Peyton (285) both finished fifth for the Norsemen.

Kadolph was 1-2 with a win by fall over ADM's Ethan Asche in 2:35 during the fifth-place match. Peyton finished 2-2 with a win by fall over Nevada's Nate Anderson in 3:37 and a 3-2 victory over DCG's Ryan Pertzsch.

During the victory over Nevada at its home double dual Roland-Story picked up four pins and three wins by forfeit.

Anthony Jones pinned Nevada's Simon Mills in 2:24 at 160, Kadolph stuck Quentin Tolle in 1:01, Tjaden won by fall over Nicholas Lauritzen in 24 seconds and Peyton defeated Anderson in 35 seconds. Eslick, Dylan Nims (138) and Hunter Hardin (182) received the forfeit wins for Roland-Story.

In the loss to Boone all four Norsemen victories came by forfeit. Hardin, Kadolph, Tjaden and Peyton were the Roland-Story wrestlers to receive a forfeit against the Toreadors.
