Roland-Story sports round-up: Norse girls golf team wins Bondurant-Farrar Invitational

The Roland-Story golf teams both competed in three meets and the Norsemen boys track team ran at the Bear Trax Classic in Brooklyn last week.

The Roland-Story girls golf team won the Bondurant-Farrar Invitational at the Terrace Hills Golf Course in Altoona April 17 with an 18-hole score of 356. The Norse took second at their five-school home meet at the River Bend Golf Course in Story City April 20 and they came in fourth out of nine schools at the West Marshall Invite April 18 at the Lincoln Valley Golf Course in State Center.

The girls shot a 194 over nine holes at River Bend. They carded 379 over 18 holes at State Center.

The Roland-Story boys golf team took second at a home quadrangular meet at River Bend April 18 with a 9-hole team score of 179. The Norse dropped a 9-hole dual with North Polk at River Bend April 17, shooting a 184 to the Comets' 166, and they came in fifth with a 9-hole round of 190 at the Bob Schmadeke Invitational Friday at the Town & Country Golf Club in Grundy Center.

The Roland-Story boys track team came in fifth at the Bear Trax Classic April 18. The Norsemen finished with a team score of 87.

Here is what we learned from last week's Roland-Story high school athletic competition.

Girls golf emerges from busy week looking tough

The Roland-Story girls golf team had a successful week.

At the Bondurant-Farrar Invitational shot the best 18-hole score in Class 2A thus far with an impressive round of 79. Her younger sister Brinley finished medalist runner-up with an 85 and freshman Kelsey Johnston took third with a 91.

Gabriella Wakefield placed sixth with a 101 as the final Norse golfer to turn in a counted score at Terrace Hills. Brooke Thompson placed seventh with a 104 and Courtney Schreier eighth with a 108 for Roland-Story.

At State Center Makenna shot an 80 over 18 holes to place second to Grundy Center's Abbie Lindeman, who carded a 78, which is the second-best score in 1A to date. Brinley placed third with an 83, her best 18-hole effort of the year and the second-best in 2A behind her older sister.

Thompson was 25th with a 107 and Grace Corcoran 27th with a 109 for the final counted Roland-Story scores. Johnston tied for 31st with a 113 and Wakefield tied for 33rd with a 114.

During the home quad meet Makenna shot a 42 and Brinley a 44 over nine holes to place second and third behind medalist Allie Pfantz, who edged out the Carlson sisters with a 41. Eva Corcoran took seventh with a 50, Wakefield and Thompson tied for 12th with a 54 and Schreier shot a 59 to place 18th.

Norsemen boys golfers have strong showing at home quad meet

The Roland-Story boys golf team bounced back from a rough loss to North Polk April 17 with a strong showing during its home quadrangular meet April 18.

Against North Polk, the Norsemen were led by Braylen Loots, who shot a 41 to place third behind the Comets' Dyllon Ireland and Jacob Eagan, who shot a 37 and 40 respectively. Hayden Eslick and Nels Hanson tied for fifth with identical rounds of 47, Hayden Janssen took eighth with a 49, Patrick Gomez was 11th with a 53 and Evan Bangert 12th with a 56.

During the home triangular Loots tied West Marshall's Hunter Polley with a 43. South Hamilton's Connor Deppe and Woodward-Granger's Nick Bermel and Landon Chambers each shot a 41 to tie for first.

Eslick tied for seventh with a 44, Jansen tied for ninth with a 45 and Jack Birkland took 14th with a 47 to finish the counted scoring for Roland-Story at the home triangular. Nels Hanson tied for 17th with a 49 and Brett Schmitz took 24th with a 61.

At the Bob Schmadeke Invite Loots tied for eighth with a 43, Birkland tied for 15th with a 48, Ben Greenfield tied for 19th with a 49 and Patrick Gomez tied for 21st with a 50. Eslick took 23rd with a 52 and Janssen 24th with a 53.

Roland-Story boys track team wins two events at BGM

The Roland-Story boys track team medaled in nine events during the Bear Trax Classic.

The Norsemen won two events, placed second four times and picked up a trio of bronze medals.

Kale Lande won the 400-meter dash for Roland-Story with a time of 52.17 seconds. He easily beat the 55.71 time by BCLUW's Connor Lynch for first.

Lande teamed up with Heston McIlrath, Hesston Johnson and Ben Greenfield to win the 4X400 in 3:30.54. Roland-Story finished well ahead of BCLUW's runner-up time of 3:43.57.

The Norse 4X200 team of Dillon Lettow, Gavin Carpenter, Johnson and McIlrath clocked in at 1:35.77 to place second to Hampton-Dumont-CAL's 1:31.81. Johnson, Brayden Kilstofte, Boaz Clark and Greenfield were runner-up in the 4X800 after running an 8:50.16 to trail only BCLUW's 8:40.30 and Luke Patton, Logan Crank, Jake Berggren and Jayden Strum ran a 1:10.27 in the shuttle hurdle to place second behind HDC's 1:09.89.

Roland Yates added a silver medal in the discus for Roland-Story with a throw of 128 feet, 7 inches. Pella Christian's Trevor Veenstra blew away the rest of the field with a winning throw of 176-6.

The Norsemen 4X100 team of Berggren, Patton, Strum and Lettow placed third in 46.74. Patton also finished third in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 18.60 and Tom Seversike won a bronze in the high jump after jumping 5-2.
