Roland-Story sports round-up: Norse remain undefeated in boys basketball

The Class 2A No. 3 Roland-Story boys basketball team went to 8-0 on the season with victories over Prairie City-Monroe, Iowa Falls-Alden and West Marshall last week.

The Norsemen scored a 64-39 victory over PCM Dec. 20 in Story City. They downed Iowa Falls-Alden Jan. 3 at Iowa Falls by a 70-41 margin and rolled to a 75-22 victory over West Marshall in Story City Friday to improve to 6-0 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

The Roland-Story girls won a 57-52 battle with PCM and suffered losses to IFA (44-37) and 3A fifth-ranked West Marshall (52-41). The loss to West Marshall put the Norse girls at 6-3 overall and 5-1 in the HOIC.

The Norse wrestling team went 2-3 at the St. Edmond Duals in Fort Dodge Saturday. Roland-Story defeated the Fort Dodge JV team (31-30) and St. Edmond (42-36) and came up short against AGWSR (60-18), West Hancock (63-18) and Southeast Valley (48-21).

The Roland-Story wrestlers also lost to Perry (60-21) and PCM (78-6) Dec. 20 at Story City and Clear Lake (60-21) and Humboldt (75-6) Jan. 5 at Humboldt.

Here is what we learned from Roland-Story's week of high school sports competition.

Boys basketball continues to dominate

The Roland-Story boys continued to overwhelm their opposition with three more wins of 25 points or more. The Norsemen ended the week with an average victory margin of 33.6 points and they've won every game by at least 17 points.

In the victory over PCM before Christmas break Roland-Story held a huge 47-27 rebounding advantage and committed just six turnovers. Isaiah Naylor had 23 points and three steals, Jonovan Wilkinson 17 points, six rebounds and five assists, Luke Patton 11 points, 19 rebounds and three assists and steals apiece and Been Greenfield 8 points, five rebounds and three assists.

The Norsemen jumped out to an early 16-3 lead and coasted to victory against IFA. They overcame 35.2% shooting with a colossal 61-23 rebounding advantage, a 13-3 edge in made free throws and limiting the Cadets to 30.8% shooting.

Wilkinson had 21 points, nine rebounds and four assists and steals apiece for Roland-Story against IFA. Naylor added 15 points and four steals, Patton posted another double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds, Greenfield put up 4 points, 10 rebounds and six assists and Kale Lande 5 points and nine rebounds.

In the win over West Marshall the Norsemen shot 55.2% from the field, held the Trojans to 20.5% shooting, forced 20 turnovers and posted a 37-20 rebounding advantage. Naylor went for 24 points, Dillon Lettow 11 points, Patton 10 points, 10 rebounds and four steals, Wilkinson 8 points, six assists and four steals and Greenfield 7 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Norse girls struggle offensively

The Roland-Story girls had a tough time putting the ball in the basket in their first two games back from break.

The Norse were held to 18.5% shooting (8 of 43) in the loss to IFA. That negated a 19-7 advantage in offensive rebounds and 17 forced turnovers on defense.

Claire Truesdell posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and she also had three steals and Alyssa Jones poured in 11 points off the bench against IFA. Madi Bauer added 9 points and six rebounds and Elizabeth Ihle 5 points, three assists and two steals.

In the loss to West Marshall Bauer and Kate Berggren both scored 8 points and Ihle and Kamryn Lande added 7 apiece. Lande also pulled down seven rebounds and had two steals, Ihle tallied six boards and one steal, Jones finished with five rebounds and Bauer had four boards and one steal.

Roland-Story withstood a late PCM rally in its win over the Mustangs before the break. The Norse held on after hitting eight 3-pointers, making 13 of 17 free throws and forcing 20 turnovers.

A balanced attack on offense helped Roland-Story prevail over PCM. Bauer had 15 points and two steals, Truesdell 15 points and three rebounds and Lande 13 points and three boards.

Jones chipped in 8 points and four rebounds off the bench against the Mustangs.

Norsemen earn seven pins at St. Edmond Duals

The Roland-Story wrestling team picked up a total of seven wins by fall at the St. Edmond Duals Saturday.

In the victory over the Fort Dodge JV Reece Fulton pinned Fort Dodge's Angel Sandoval in 59 seconds, Hayden Eslick pulled off a 9-0 major decision over Hunter Kasperbauer at 106 pounds and Aaron Peyton scored a 3-2 victory over Luke Fierke at 285. Kooper Spalding (113), Jaxson Kadolph (195) and Thomas Tjaden (220) each won by forfeit for the Norsemen.

In the win over St. Edmond Kadolph pinned the Gaels' Adam Walker and Peyton stuck Max Webster. Eslick, Spalding, Sam Myer (132), Anthony Jones (145), Hunter Hardin (182) and Tjaden each won by forfeit.

Kadolph won by fall over Eli Brandt, Peyton pinned Tate Miller and Fulton won by forfeit during the loss to AGWSR. In the dual against West Hancock Tjaden pinned Reese Luedtke and Eslick and Spalding each won by forfeit.

Roland-Story recorded one pin, one win by decision and two forfeits against Southeast Valley. Anthony Jones pinned Southeast Valley's Brodey Laughman at 152, Peyton earned a 4-2 victory over Ryan Wicklein and Kadolph and Eslick each received a forfeit.

In the double-dual at Clear Lake the Norsemen earned one win by fall, one by decision and two forfeits against Clear Lake. Peyton pinned Aaron Richtsmeier in 57 seconds, Kadolph pulled off a 7-4 victory over Jake Trenary and Eslick and Spalding each received a forfeit.

In the loss to Humboldt the Norsemen scored their only points when Peyton pinned the Wildcats' Cael Newell in 44 seconds.

During its home dual Dec. 20 Roland-Story earned a pin, a win by decision and two forfeits against Perry. Tjaden pinned the Bluejays' Kevin Colin in 1:52, Peyton scored a 7-1 decision over Jesse Rodriguez and Eslick and Fulton received the forfeits.

Peyton scored the lone Roland-Story victory against Humboldt. He pinned the Wildcats' Kaden Clark in 5:41.
