Roland-Story sports round-up: Norse golf teams off to a strong start

The Roland-Story girls golf team easily defeated Greene County at a home dual meet April 10 at the River Bend Golf Course in Story City.

The Norse shot a 186 over nine holes to easily beat Greene County's score of 281. The Roland-Story girls also took second at the West Marshall triangular to open the season April 3 at the Lincoln Valley Golf Course in State Center, carding a 190 to beat Clarion-Goldfield-Dows' 243, but fall one stroke shy of West Marshall's winning score of 189.

The Roland-Story boys golf team placed second at the Roland-Story triangular at Riverbend April 13 with a 195 over nine holes and the Norsemen won the Ogden triangular Friday with a 178 to conclude a successful first week of action.

On the track, the Roland-Story boys placed third at the Southeast Valley Invitational with 87 points April 11 and they scored 45 points at the Saydel Invitational April 13.

The Norse girls were fifth at the East Marshall Girls Invitational April 13 in Le Grand. They tallied 78 points.

Here is what we learned from this week's Roland-Story sports action.

Roland-Story golf teams look impressive during the week

The Roland-Story golf teams both showed they could be in for a big year last week.

In the girls' win over Greene County Makenna and Brinley Carlson shot respective rounds of 40 and 42 over nine holes to easily earn medalist and medalist runner-up honors. They did the same thing the previous week at State Center, carding rounds of 42 and 43 as Makenna won medalist and Brinley tied West Marshall's Allie Pfantz for medalist runner-up.

The Roland-Story girls also had the third through sixth-place finishers in the meet with Greene County. Abby Cook took third with a 51, Kelsey Johnston fourth with a 52, Eva Corcoran fifth with a 53. Courtney Schreier and Brook Thompson tied for sixth with identical rounds of 55.

At the West Marshall meet Cook tied for fifth with a 49 and Johnston and Corcoran took 12th and 14th with respective rounds of 56 and 57.

The boys had three golfers shoot under 50 over nine holes during their home meet. Jack Birkland led the way with a 42, Braylen Loots scored a 46 and Patrick Jamison shot a 47.

Hayden Janssen added a 50 and Hayden Eslick a 52.

In the wins over Ogden and Greene County Friday Loots and Janssen tied for medalist runner-up with identical rounds of 43. Ben Greenfield tied for fourth with a 44, Gomez tied for seventh with a 48 and Eslick was ninth with a 51.

Norse boys combine to win three events at SEV and Saydel meets

The Roland-Story boys track team won two events, placed second four times and picked up two bronze medals at the Southeast Valley Invitational.

The Norsemen won the 4X400-meter and sprint medley relays. The 4X400 team clocked in at three minutes, 35.24 seconds to easily beat Pocahontas Area's runner-up time of 3:39.27 and the sprint medley team finished in 1:38.53 to comfortably top Webster City's second-place effort of 1:40.99.

The Roland-Story 4X800 team ran a time of 8:58.26 to trail only Ogden's winning time of 8:52.51 and the Norsemen shuttle hurdle team clocked in at 1:09.31 to place second to Pocahontas Area's 1:08.21 effort. Kale Lande and Ben Greenfield were second and third in the open 400 with respective times of 53.20 and 53.79, trailing only the 51.44 effort of Pocahontas Area's Josiah DeYoung, and Hesston Johnson completed the 200 in 24.59 to take second to Webster City's C.J. Hisler, who won in 23.85.

The Roland-Story 4X200 team ran a 1:38.05 to place third behind Southeast Valley (1:37.18) and Webster City (1:37.21).

At Saydel the Roland-Story boys picked up one gold and silver medal apiece and three bronze medals.

The Norsemen ran the 4X800 in 8:39.02 to just edge out Gilbert's 8:39.85 for first. They took second in the 4X400, clocking in at 3:31.03 to place only behind Ballard's 3:28.44.

The Roland-Story 4X200 team ran a 1:35.23 to take third behind Carlisle's 1:33.37 and Prairie City-Monroe's 1:34.97. Roland Yates gave the Norsemen an individual bronze in the discus with a throw of 142 feet, 10 inches and Lande was third in the open 400 with a time of 51.59.

Roland-Story girls win two relays at East Marshall

The Roland-Story girl picked up three relay victories and an individual gold medal at East Marshall.

The Norse 4X100 team finished in 52.11 to beat out Bondurant-Farrar's 52.40 for first. The Roland-Story 4X200 team clocked in at 1:51.55 to top Bondurant-Farrar's 1:53.89 for the win and the Norse sprint medley team finished in 1:57.57 to easily outlast Bondurant-Farrar's 2:00.71 for first.

Kamryn Lande won the open 100 for the Norse girls. She ran a 13.60 to edge the 13.69 effort by Oskaloosa's Maleah Walker for the victory.

Claire Truesdell placed second in the 3,000 and third in the 1,500 for the Norse girls.

Truesdell ran the 3,000 in 12:17.21 to trail only the 11:25.81 time by Union's Amilia Condon. The Roland-Story sophomore finished the 1,500 in 5:32.43.

The Roland-Story distance medley team ran a 4:48.74 to place second behind Oskaloosa's 4:38.45 showing.
