Roland-Story sports round-up: Norse basketball teams sweep Saydel

The Roland-Story wrestling teams swept Saydel in a Heart of Iowa Conference doubleheader in Story City and the Norsemen wrestling team placed ** at the Jim Kinyon Invitational in Story City last week.

The Norsemen boys basketball team, ranked third in Class 2A, crushed Saydel by an 86-40 score Dec. 13. The victory put Roland-Story at 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the HOIC.

The Roland-Story girls outlasted Saydel by a 52-42 score. They improved to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the HOIC.

The Norsemen wrestling team scored 61 points at the Kinyon Invite to tie South Hamilton for 11th place. Winterset won the team championship with 266.5 points and Hampton-Dumont-CAL was second with 229.

Here is what we learned from the final full week of athletic competition before the Holidays.

Hot shooting helps Roland-Story boys roll

The Roland-Story boys basketball team was clicking on both sides of the ball in its victory over Saydel.

The Norsemen shot 56.2% from the field, made 13 of 28 3-pointers and only had three turnovers in the win. They also came up with 11 steals defensively.

Isaiah Naylor really stood out for Roland-Story during the game. The senior guard scored 30 points after making 12 of 20 field goals, including 6 of 10 3-pointers.

Luke Patton just missed a double-double after recording 10 points and nine rebounds. Jonovan Wilkinson was close to a triple-double, finishing with 9 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

Ben Greenfield chipped in 5 points, rebounds and assists apiece. Boaz Clark added 10 points and three assists off the bench, Dillon Lettow had 9 points and two assists, Tristan Anderson and Nick Butler scored 4 points apiece, Brett Schmitz netted 3 points and Kale Lande scored 2.

Norse girls start and finish strong against Saydel

The Roland-Story girls used a big first quarter and a solid fourth to get past Saydel.

The Norse outscored Saydel 12-2 in the first quarter. Saydel pulled within three at the half, but Roland-Story went up by four after three quarters then outscored the Eagles 18-12 over the final eight minutes to pull off the victory.

Roland-Story won despite getting ourebounded by a decisive 47-29 margin and shooting just 29.8% from the field. The Norse prevailed by holding the Eagles to 28.9% shooting and forcing 30 turnovers.

Claire Truesdell hit 4 of 8 3-pointers and went for 16 points in the win for Roland-Story. Elizabeth Ihle had her best game of the season, going for 12 points, seven steals and three assists.

Madi Bauer added 9 points, five rebounds, three steals, two assists and one block. Caden Thoreson and Alyssa Jones chipped in 5 points and four rebounds apiece, Kate Berggren tallied 3 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals and Kamryn Lande added 2 points, three rebounds, two steals and one block.

Hesston Johnson places third at Kinyon Invite

Roland-Story's Hesston Johnson came in third at 170 pounds during the Kinyon Invitational Saturday.

Johnson went 3-1 during the tournament. He defeated Gilbert's Hank Johnson by a 12-0 major decision in the quarterfinals, dropped a 3-1 decision to Winterset's Eduardo Gracia in the semifinals and came back to pin HDC's Sean Heilskov in 56 seconds during the consolation semifinals then defeat the Southeast Polk JV's Noah Trexel by a 7-6 decision in the third-place match.

Aaron Peyton took fourth at 285 and Jaxson Kadolph fifth at 195 for the Norse.

Peyton defeated the Southeast Polk JV's Tavian Collins by a 5-4 decision, Winterset's Seth Vanderlinden by a 9-3 decision. He lost by 2-0 decision to Algona's Cole Sigler in the semifinals and dropped a 5-0 decision to Grinnell's Gene Blalock in the third-place match.

Kadolph suffered a 9-1 loss to East Marshall/GMG's Drew Wheater, pinned HDC's Maddon Evans in 4:26, lost by fall to the Southeast Polk JV's Jace Baxter then pinned Gilbert's Jackson Stensland in 3:30 during the fifth-place match.

Hayden Eslick took sixth at 106 with a 1-3 record. His lone win came by fall over Gilbert's Dennis May in 3:34 during the quarterfinals.

Thomas Tjaden took seventh at 220 for the Norsemen. He went 1-2, pinning HDC's Hector Bunston in 2:11 during the seventh-place match.
