Roller skaters will have a new place to practice their moves with the planning of a roller skating space at Wes Montgomery Park.

The Indianapolis park district will start to design an outdoor skating area this summer at the east side park, 3400 N Hawthorne Lane, said Phyllis Boyd, director of Indy Parks & Recreation.

An outside roller skating area is in the works for Wes Montgomery Park in Indianapolis. The design phase starts in summer 2023.

The area won’t have a flow bowl like Willard Park Skatepark that opened just east of downtown in June 2022, but skateboarders are welcome, as are rollerbladers and others with wheels.

The surface will be flat concrete.

“That’s the current idea. It may be that the roller skating community would like to see something else; but we’ll find out as part of the design process,” Boyd said.

City-County Councillor Keith L. Graves, from District 13,  proposed the project, she said.

“There has been a contingent of roller skaters across the city that have been wanting good places to roller skate outside,” she said, adding that skaters have been taking outdoor basketball courts, tennis courts and asphalt parking lots at Indy parks.

Design for the project will likely continue through the end of the year, Boyd said.

The project has funding for the design phase, but still needs money to start construction, she said.
