Is romance dead in Mississippi? See how the state's dating search data compare to others

Mississippi may need a jumpstart in the romance department as new data shows the state's residents are the least likely to use computer searches for dating-related terms and dating sites.

In an effort to find out which states are most interested in actively dating, sexual wellness website bedbible.com conducted a study on dating-related search terms. Forty-two search terms were analyzed in all 50 states. The study found that, on average, Americans in all the states combined are searching those terms 9,464,952 times per month.

The search terms tested included “dating,” “how to date,” “online dating,” “dating apps,” “bars for date night,” “first date restaurants” and “romantic restaurants near me” among others. The terms also included names of popular dating sites and apps like Tinder, Hinge and Plenty of Fish.

The total number of searches was totaled and compared to each state’s population.

Mississippi ranked last at 50 in dating-related search terms. Mississippians seem to be the least interested in dating as the data show just 1,713 searches per 100,000 residents per month.

Maine ranked the highest on the list with an average of 4,276 per 100,00 residents per month.

Other Southern states ranked low on the list. Alabama ranked 42, and Arkansas trailed it at 43. Tennessee fell more toward the middle at 32.

While Mississippi did rank last, the state does have its fair share of online dating. According to datingnews.com, Christian Mingle, a dating sight with over 15 million members looking for a partner who shares their Christian faith, is the most popular option in Mississippi.

Still, according to data from Google Trends, there are 24 states that searched for the term "Christian Mingle" in the past 12 months more than Mississippi.

Dating apps have proven to be a popular option for modern romance. A Forbes Health study conducted in August 2023 polled 5,000 U.S. respondents who said they have actively dated in the past year. Of those respondents, three in 10 said they have used a dating app or site, and 40% said it made dating easier.

As easy as it may be, if you are single in Mississippi and looking to increase your chances of getting matches, you might want to increase that distance radius on your profile.
