Rome woman dies in crash with tractor trailer on Route 8 in Chenango County

A 22-year-old Rome woman was killed Monday after the van she was a passenger in hit the rear of a tractor trailer in Chenango County, according to a release from New York State Police.

Troopers responded just before 11 a.m. to the two-vehicle crash in the town of Columbus. A preliminary investigation revealed both vehicles were traveling south on Route 8 when the tractor trailer began to make a right turn, and the van struck its rear, the release said.

Jasmine R. Morrison was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said. The driver, 24-year-old Tyler G. Stewart of Lee Center, was airlifted to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse and does not appear to have any life-threatening injuries. The driver of the tractor trailer, Chad A. Alishaukas, 38, of Sherburne, did not report any injuries.

The road was closed until 3 p.m. as law enforcement responded to the crash. An investigation is still ongoing, the release said.
