Rome's Christmas Tree Lights Up Remotely Due to COVID Restrictions

The turning on of the lights on Rome’s Christmas tree, or “Spelacchio”, was carried out remotely by Mayor Virginia Raggi this year, as the city adapted the annual ceremony in light of coronavirus restrictions.

This footage shows Raggi lighting up the tree at Piazza Venezia, pressing a button from an event held at the Capitoline Museums. The footage also shows dazzling lights at other locations around the city.

Raggi said this year’s lights would serve as a way for residents of the city to feel united.
