Ronald E. Dull named Legionnaire of the Year

Vietnam War veteran Ronald E. Dull, a member of Harry Higgins Post 88 of the American Legion, Ashland, has been named Ohio's Legionnaire of the Year for 2023.

He was presented with a plaque by Department of Ohio Commander Charles Stennis. Ron is serving his 16th year as Commander of Post 88.

He has also held the positions of first vice commander, second vice commander and adjutant. He has served as post historian and Americanism chairman for several years. He has been a member of Post 88 for 38 years. He is a member of Post 88’s Sons of the American Legion and is an honorary member of Post 88’s American Legion Riders.

He passes out flowers to the mothers every year for Mother’s Day during the breakfast. He conducts the Veterans Day, Pearl Harbor Day and Four Chaplains memorial service yearly at the post home. He has attended many district meetings, Department of Ohio conventions and has attended national conventions in Charlotte, N.C., Baltimore, Cincinnati, Reno, and Minneapolis.

He was a member of the American Legion honor and color guard until he became disabled. He was named Legionnaire of the Year in March 20 and March 2023 at Post 88. He was named Fifth District Legionnaire of the Year in June 2023.

He was honored for appreciation for hosting the Fifth District American Legion bowling tournament in December 1991 and served as a district chairman for three years. He was named Veteran of the Year in 1997 and 2001 from the Veterans of Vietnam War Post 9. A life member of Post 9, he is the secretary and treasurer, a position he has held for many years. He is a life member of Amvets Post 96 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1067, where he is a past assistant quartermaster. He initiated the formation of the Ashland County Joint Veterans Council in 1990.

He has also served many years as the Ashland County Commander of the American Legion.

Ron has been in charge of the City of Ashland’s Memorial Day parade and program for more than 29 years. He is responsible for conducting all the Memorial Day meetings and assists his wife, Mary Ann, in doing the parade lineup every year.

Post 88 donated money for an American Flag that comes down from the ceiling at Kates Gymnasium at Ashland University prior to the games in the gymnasium. He was presented with a plaque that is on display in the main lobby of Kates Gymnasium.

He initiated the start of Veterans Day at the Ashland County Fair in 1989 as well as initiating serving cornbread and beans to the veterans. He assists the Joint Veterans Council, who has taken over the event, with the annual cornbread and bean soup at the Ashland County Fair every year. He initiated the formation of the Ashland County Joint Veterans Council in 1990.

He currently serves as the Commander of the Joint Veterans Council. Being disabled, Ron continues do what he can for the veterans. Ron is a very dedicated veteran.
