Ronan Farrow sees ‘commonality’ between Weinstein, Trump cases

Author and journalist Ronan Farrow says he sees “commonality” between the legal cases former President Trump faces and that of disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein.

“There is a commonality of the legal theories being applied,” Farrow said during a Thursday night appearance on CNN. “In both cases, prosecutors argued for and judges allowed in evidence of crimes other than the ones being charged.”

In the Trump hush money case, Farrow noted, “that means all of these AMI payments,” he said in reference to the National Inquirer’s bid to help Trump win the 2016 election.

The judge overseeing Trump’s case is allowing evidence of the AMI payments “to establish the intent,” of Trump to cover up the hush money payments to porn actor Stormy Daniels, Farrow said.

“Nevertheless, I think that the Weinstein verdict being overturned because of the letting in of that kind of more attenuated evidence,” he continued. “Just illustrates how fraught it is any time a court lets that in. And certainly Donald Trump is going to capitalize on any chance he has to say, ‘Hey this was a prejudice prosecution, they let in too much.'”

New York’s highest court overturned Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape and sexual assault conviction this week, ruling the judge who presided over the case made “egregious errors,” by allowing women to testify on allegations that were not part of the case he was ultimately convicted in.
