Roofs or ramps, raised or repaired: "Servants on Site" returns to Henderson

Jun. 7—HENDERSON — Teams of volunteers will gather in Henderson during the week of June 20-25 to help residents make needed repairs or additions to their homes.

"Servants on Site" is an annual project of Rebuilding Hope Inc., a Henderson-based nonprofit that makes home repairs for those who have financial barriers or are physically unable to do the repairs themselves.

Founded in 2006 by Randolph and Gail Wilson, Rebuilding Hope recruits volunteers from churches, youth groups and other organizations to spend a week in service. The summer missions camp is known, appropriately enough, as "Servants on Site" or SOS.

After two summers disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, SOS is back on track.

Participants will arrive on Monday, June 20, and depart on Saturday, June 25. They will be housed at Central Baptist Church. Breakfast and supper will be served at the church, beginning with Monday supper before the work week begins.

In addition to participants from the Tri-County area, a team will be coming from Windy Gap in Macon County and another from as far away as Georgia.

Volunteers invest more than their time. There is a registration fee of $125, which covers the cost of a theme T-shirt, meals and lodging. Scholarships are available.

Volunteers are still needed. To register, call 252-438-5132, send an email message to sossec@rebuildinghopeinc.org or visit the website at rebuildinghopeinc.org.

Leadership for SOS includes Leigh Humphries, of Person County, who will serve as project coordinator. Vann Wester, a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, will be construction coordinator. Materials coordination will be provided by Walt Slaton, a member of Central Baptist Church. Amy Beck, the SOS secretary, is a member of West Oxford Baptist Church.

The theme for the week, "Purpose Defined," will be presented by Bruce Beck, pastor of West Oxford Baptist Church. The meaning of the theme will be explained by guest speakers at each of the evening worship services during the week:

—Tuesday, "Be Thankful," based on Psalm 138. Pastor Greg Richardson of Stovall United Methodist Church, Stovall.

—Wednesday, "Be Holy," based on Isaiah 6. Pastor Josiah Antell of Lake Gaston Baptist Church, Littleton.

—Thursday, "Be Gospel-worthy," based on Philippians 1:27-30. Pastor Brett Marlowe, a member of Faith Baptist Church, Youngsville.

—Friday, "Be Bold," based on Acts 4:31. Youth Pastor Brian Browning of Windy Gap BaptistChurch, Franklin.

The public is invited to join the volunteers at the worship services at 7 p.m. each evening at Central Baptist Church.

Lunches at the various work sites will be provided by local churches, including Fuller's Chapel, Gardner Baptist Church, Mountain Creek Baptist Church, New Life Baptist Church (Henderson), North Henderson Baptist Church, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Oxford Baptist Church, Peaces Chapel, Plank Chapel United Methodist Church, Lake Gaston Baptist Church and West Oxford Baptist Church.
