Room Lift is a Mail-Order Interior Design Service That's Changing the Game
Designer Megan Hersch has been running her full-service design firm Studio MG Interiors for a decade, but recently she went a different route when she started Room Lift-a mail-order design service. Room Lift allows you to work with an actual designer to find the perfect pieces for your home, all for a low fee.
"I believe that everyone deserves good design and deserves to love coming home!" Megan says. "And I don’t believe this privilege should be associated with a high price tag. I created Room Lift as a service to sift through all of the good design that is available, so that for one low per-room cost, customers get an experienced designer's eye to give them recommendations that work for their specific home, at their specific budget."
So, how does Room Lift work? First, you take a five to eight of photos of the space you want to design, and upload them to a Dropbox on Room Lift's website. Then, you fill out a questionnaire-one that covers your budget, your style, your interests, who lives in your home, if you have pets, important measurements, and more. As part of the questionnaire, you'll head to Room Lift's Pinterest page, where you can browse boards full of pins with designs for different styles. Choose two styles from the Pinterest boards that you like, finish answering all the questions, and you're good to go.
Once you've filled everything out, you can choose whether you want two designs or three designs for the room you want designed (a $495 fee and a $695 fee, respectively). If, say, you want to design your whole home, you'll get a 20-percent discount on the service if you choose to use Room Lift for three or more rooms.
Okay, so you've made your choices-now what? Well, within three-to-five days of payment, you'll receive a rough sketch of your floor plan for you to fill in measurements. Send back a photo of it, and in about two weeks, Room Lift will send you a totally curated, customized box complete with a floor plan; paper cards featuring tons of different products to choose from that fit your style and budget with info on the price, where to buy them, and what color to go with; and paint chips or wallpaper samples. You'll also get a complementary 15-minute phone or email consultation to discuss your designs. From there, you can go through the cards and choose the things you like, and order them yourself-no need to go through a designer to make any purchases.
Oh, and if you're worried about all the paper being used in a custom box, you can rest easy knowing that Room Lift works with an organization called One Tree Planted to plant a tree (they donate $1 per box, which equals one tree each) in a national park for every box sent. And sure, while Room Lift could go paperless, Megan likes that customers have something tangible to sort through while they decide what pieces they want to bring in to their spaces. "We send a physical box full of product photos so customers can see them in person and mix and match the options in front of them," she notes.
