Milwaukee Film's 2022 Cultures & Communities Festival will be held Sept. 14-18, and again the festival, a blend of films and events addressing health, equity and inclusion, will be a mix of in-person and virtual programming.

More than 20 in-person screenings are planned at the Oriental Theatre during the festival, formerly known as the Minority Health Film Festival. The opening night film will be "The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks"; directed by Johanna Hamilton and Yoruba Richen and based on the biography by Milwaukee native Jeanne Theoharis, the movie is billed as the first feature-length documentary focusing on the civil rights hero.

“It was a big get for us, as we’ll be one of only a few festivals to screen the film before its release later this year,” Milwaukee Film Chief Innovation Officer Geraud Blanks said in an announcement of the festival.

Other in-person movies showing at the 2022 Cultures & Communities Festival announced so far include:

  • "Sign o' the Times," the 1987 concert movie hybrid featuring Prince and the album of the same name, showing in a restored print for its 35th anniversary.

  • "Fly So Far," a documentary following the story of a woman in El Salvador who was sentenced to 30 years in prison after having a miscarriage.

  • "Daughter of a Lost Bird," in which an adult Native American adoptee sets out to connect with her birth family and a culture she never had a chance to experience.

  • "Liquor Store Dreams," a portrait of two Korean American children of liquor store owners in Los Angeles who set out to bridge generational divides with their immigrant parents.

Information on virtual screenings (streaming on Milwaukee Film's online portal), additional in-person titles and related events will be released Aug. 16.

All-access passes, which include all of the in-person and virtual screenings in the festival, are available for $100, $75 for Milwaukee Film members, are available at mkefilm.org. Prices go up to $125, $100 for Milwaukee Film members, on Aug. 16; that's also when individual tickets for in-person screenings and events go on sale. (No individual tickets will be sold for virtual screenings.)
