The Rose-Hulman 2022-2023 women's basketball season was canceled after just five games due to low roster numbers.

Saturday night, after the Rose-Hulman women's basketball team lost to Transylvania in a game where only seven players took the floor, the university's athletic department announced the rest of the season is canceled to "protect the health and safety of student-athletes due to low roster numbers."

The NCAA Division III team was 2-3 on the season, but played each of its past two games with only seven players available. Just nine players are listed on the team's roster. Rose-Hulman athletic director Ayanna Tweedy told IndyStar players were involved in the decision, which was made prior to Saturday's game.

"Our mission at Rose-Hulman is a safe and equitable student-athlete experience.  The low roster numbers for this year's team cause a potential risk for the mental and physical health and safety of our players.  Although this decision is disappointing for all involved, it is the right decision for the overall best interest of our student-athletes," Tweedy said in a statement.

Thirteen players were on last year's roster, and none were seniors. However, four did not return this season.
