Roseau advances to school's first state baseball championship game
Jun. 16—ST. CLOUD, Minn. — On Tuesday, the Roseau baseball team won a quarterfinal game at the Minnesota state tournament for the first time in school history.
On Wednesday, the Rams made history again.
Roseau beat St. Agnes 8-1 in the state semifinals at Dick Putz Field to reach the school's first state championship game.
The Rams, who weren't one of the five state teams that received seeds entering the tournament, advance to Friday's 1 p.m. championship game against No. 1 seed Fairmont at Target Field in Minneapolis.
After Isaac Wensloff struck out 14 in a 13-2 win over Duluth Marshall in the state quarterfinals, his brother Aaron Wensloff followed it up with eight strikeouts in the semifinals.
"Isaac set the tone in Game 1 and Aaron followed suit in Game 2," Roseau coach Josh Weckman said. "When you can throw out two (pitchers) and have confidence of them being a No. 1, that's a luxury few teams get to experience."
The Wensloffs did the damage at the plate, too, against St. Agnes.
Isaac was 3-for-4 with three runs, three runs batted in and a triple. Aaron was 4-for-4 with two doubles and three runs batted in.
Weckman said it was tough to describe the emotions of landing in Roseau's first state title game.
"Watching this group of young men grow up, I always felt there was a possibility," Weckman said. "To have it come true and get the opportunity to play a state championship game at Target Field gives me goosebumps just saying it."
