FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — A little less than two weeks ago at the Big 12 outdoor track and field championships, Demisha Roswell broke a 16-year-old meet record in the women's 100-meter hurdles.

On Thursday, the Texas Tech standout cruised through the first round of competition at the NCAA West Preliminary meet. The junior from Jamaica won her heat, running a time of 13.07 seconds into a slight negative wind. It was fourth fastest among 48 starters.

Roswell advances to the quarterfinal round at 6:15 p.m. Saturday.

Thursday was day two of the four-day meet hosted by Arkansas at John McDonnell Field. Friday is the second day of men's competition, Saturday the second day of women's competition.

Arkansas is one of two regional sites narrowing the field of athletes for the NCAA outdoor championships June 8-11 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. The East Preliminary meet is taking place in Bloomington, Indiana.

In individual events at each regional, 48 athletes are whittled to 12 to advance to Eugene. The regionals also determine the top 12 in relay events.

In Thursday night's action, four Tech women clinched berths in Eugene. Senior Chloe Wall posted the top height in the pole vault, and Monae' Nichols, Ruth Usoro and Ruta Lasmane finished second, fourth and eighth, respectively, in the long jump.

Wall topped out at 13 feet, 9 3/4 inches. It will be the first trip to the NCAA outdoor for the senior from Farmersville. She finished 10th at this year's NCAA indoor, good for second-team all-America status.

In the long jump, Nichols went 21-7 1/2, Usoro went 21-2 3/4 and Lasmane's best mark was 20-8 1/2.

Sprinter Rosemary Chukwuma advanced to Saturday's quarterfinal round in both the 100 meters and the 200. She won her heat of the 100 in 11.32 seconds, fourth best overall, and won her heat of the 200 in 22.94, third best overall.

Tech began the week with 27 entries on the men's side and a nation-best 36 on the women's. Javelin thrower Markim Felix became the first Tech athlete to qualify for Eugene when he finished fifth on Wednesday.

In men's action, 11 Red Raiders advanced to Friday's rounds with their performances Wednesday night. Maliek Kendall in the 110-meter hurdles and Moad Zahafi in the 800 meters ran the fastest first-round times in their events, and Courtney Lindsey ran the second-fastest time in the first round of the 200.

Kendall clocked a wind-legal 13.36 seconds, swiftest among 23 starters and fifth-best all-time by a Tech hurdler.

The four faster times all were run by Monterey graduate Omo Osaghae, a three-time U.S. champion and one-time world champion in the 60-meter hurdles indoors.

Zahafi breezed through his heat of the 800 in 1 minute, 46.25 seconds. Lindsey knocked out a wind-assisted 20.21 to win his heat in the 200.

Kendall, Denim Rogers and Taylor Rooney all advanced to Friday in the 110 hurdles, and Lindsey, Terrence Jones and Jacolby Shelton all did likewise in the 100.
