Mayo and Byron played to the wire a year ago in the Rotary tournament before the Spartans finally pulled out a narrow win.

After a close start between the teams Friday, Byron never really threatened. Mayo used its quick-handed and quick-footed defense to give the Bears offensive fits most of the night.

The combination of Kaia Kirkeby and Hannah Hanson at the top of the defense, Ava Miller at the back of it and plenty of others who can move, provided Mayo the easy win.

The Spartans, now 8-1 overall, were paced offensively by Kirkeby with 15 points. Ava Miller had 14 and Izabel Ruskell 10.

The Spartans led 35-18 at intermission.

Byron slipped to 6-3. It got 13 points from Kendra Harvey, who was the Bears' only double-figure scorer.
