Rotterdam's Messiah Lutheran, SafeHaven LGBTQ+ to hold festival for new center

Sep. 16—The Messiah Lutheran Church, along with SafeHaven LGBTQ+ Inc. will host a music festival at the newly established Trinity Community Center to raise funds and awareness about the facility.
The Trinity Community Center located at 705 Curry Road was once the site of Trinity Reformed Church, which voted this past winter to unify with the Messiah Lutheran Church, according to a press release from the organization.
The Messiah Lutheran Church decided to keep the property and turn it into a community center that anyone regardless of faith could use. It is now holding a music festival Friday to raise funds for the center and SafeHaven LGBTQ+ Inc., an organization formed by Legacy Casanõva, a Black transgender LGBTQ activist. SafeHaven is also launching a media program in the community center, according to the release.
The program will allow youth in the community to produce music, short films, podcasts and other various media items.
During the festival from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday various acts will take the stage to perform, including a rock band, church pianist, youth guitarist and two drag performers. Schenectady School District teacher Kristen Olochnowicz will be the headliner and take the stage after her former student Star Thacher performs.
Doors to the event open at 6 p.m. The event is free but donations will be excepted and split between the community center and SafeHaven. Mask are required for everyone attending, regardless of vaccination status.
