Oregon Ducks drop in national football polls after loss in rivalry game vs. Oregon State Beavers

Oregon lost its rivalry game Saturday afternoon, had its fleeting hopes to play for a Pac-12 title squashed by Washington’s Apple Cup win Saturday night, then had its offensive coordinator flee for Arizona State Sunday morning.

It was a rough weekend for the Ducks (9-3, 7-2 Pac-12), who missed out on a chance to play Southern California Friday night in Las Vegas for the conference championship when they allowed Oregon State to rally from a 21-point second-half deficit to win 38-34 in Reser Stadium Saturday.

Their fate was sealed when the Huskies defeated Washington State in Pullman, a victory that put Utah in the championship game. If the Cougars had won, Oregon would be prepping for the Trojans this week.

And then on Sunday morning, Kenny Dillingham was named the Sun Devils’ new coach, followed by a drop out of the top 10 in the national rankings.

Oregon is now No. 15 in both the Associated Press and USA TODAY Sports Coaches polls, a drop of five spots from No. 10 in the AP poll and six spots from No. 9 in the USA TODAY poll.

Oregon State (9-3, 6-3) moved in the other direction. The Beavers are No. 16 in both polls — their highest ranking since being No. 15 in the AP poll and No. 14 in the USA TODAY poll at the end of the 2012 regular season.

Right behind the two rivals at No. 17 in both polls is UCLA.

Leading the way for the Pac-12 are the No. 4/4 Trojans, No. 9/9 Washington and No. 12/12 Utah.

The Ducks are No. 9 in the College Football Playoff rankings, though they're certain to drop when the updated rankings come out Tuesday.

Ahead of the Trojans in both polls are three remaining undefeated teams — No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Michigan and No. 3 Texas Christian.
