Roughriders win opener, but split with Casper at Astoria Field

Jun. 29—DICKINSON — Dodging raindrops make baseball games more challenging, but the Dickinson Roughriders managed to grind out another doubleheader despite the weather at Dakota Community Bank and Trust Ballpark on Tuesday. The games both ended early due to run-rules, with the Roughriders winning the opener, 10-0, while dropping the nightcap, 15-4, to move to 6-10 on the 2023 season.

The opener went scoreless for the first two innings, but the Roughriders made up for lost time in the third with a pair of runs on a leadoff walk from Jack Price and a single from second-baseman Carson Weiler that moved Price to third. Shortstop Jace Kovash, who went 2-for-4 in the game with a pair of RBI and a run, drove in Weiler on a single to center after Price scored on a wild pitch to give Dickinson a 2-0 advantage.

In the meantime, starting pitcher Landon Olson kept the Oilers on their heels with a brilliant performance on the mound, going all six innings on 72 pitches while scattering 4 hits and striking out 3 in the shutout win.

The Roughriders ramped things up in a 7-run fourth inning with an RBI single from Price that plated centerfielder Davin Seibel and another RBI single from Kovash that allowed Kevin Olsson to cross the plate for a 4-0 lead. Isaac Daley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and scored Price, then Olson helped his own cause with a 2-run ground ball that resulted in an error and brought home Kovash and Weiler. With two-away, Dickinson scored again on a single from Kaeden Krieg — who went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI — that scored Daley and pinch-runner Nick Sobolik.

Dickinson brought home the run-rule winner in the bottom of the sixth on a walk-off single from Krieg that drove in Daley, who had reached base on a line-drive single to right field and advanced to second on a passed-ball and ended the game at 10-0.

The nightcap went just about the opposite for the Roughriders, who saw the Oilers put up a massive 9-run third inning en route to the win, despite the Roughriders getting 3-for-3 productivity from Weiler. A battery of 5 pitchers could not hold Casper in check and Kovash and Seibel drove in 2 of the 4 runs of the game, with Kovash and Camden Kubas scoring wild pitches.

The Roughriders will now head to Williston for a Friday doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m. and will next be on the turf at Astoria Field during a July 5 doubleheader exhibition game with the Badlands Big Sticks on July 5.
