It wasn’t a real holiday Tuesday for some area basketball teams Tuesday.

Instead of “HO! HO! HO!,” it was more like “NO! NO! NO!”

But, hey, experience is the catalyst for progress — at least some say.

One exception to the Tuesday blues was Copan’s winless — previously — girls squad.

The Lady Hornets put it all together to zap Cedar Vale-Dexter (Kan.), 45-27, in the opening round of the Copan Tournament.

Following are summaries of this contest and others from Tuesday.

GIRLS: Adair 57, Dewey 25

Dewey’s second outing of the season featured a competitive first half but a poor shooting second half in the first round of the Adair tourney.

“We played really well in the second quarter,” noted first-year Dewey head coach Michael Sanders. “We got our feet underneath us. We cut it to eight or 10 at halftime.”

But, in the second half, “we just couldn’t find the bucket and it kind of got away from us. Our girls played really hard, they battled.”

Among Dewey’s top offensive producers were Leigha Sauret and Chance Herren.

Bailey Hughbanks “is playing well on the defense end,” Sanders added. “She’s really, really working hard for me. … Sauret is kind of our rim protector. She gets a lot of boards.”

Dewey (0-2) takes the court again at 4:30 p.m. Friday to face Claremore-Sequoyah, which is led by former Oklahoma Union boys basketball coach Lee Ott.

BOYS: Wyandotte 78, CV 65

No real mystery to this one. Wyandotte wangled out 37 trips to the free throw line, hitting 22 of them; Caney Valley made just 15 appearances at the stripe.

Tate Longan caressed the cords for 23 points to lead the CV Trojans, followed by Mav Condry with 14 and Rocky Hester with 13. Ethan Brown and Zach Ketchum added eight and four points, respectively.

Caney Valley (1-2) sliced the margin to five points by halftime, “but we had a bad third quarter,” CV coach Tug Brinker said. “We couldn’t keep them off the free throw line. We didn’t have enough stops on defense. We played hard, we didn’t quit, we did a lot of good things.”

Next up, the Trojans play host Friday to the Caney Valley (Kan.) Bullpups.

GIRLS: Wyandotte 52, Caney Valley 46

The Lady Trojans led at the end of the third quarter, 38-37, but Wyandotte found a way to pull ahead by the final buzzer.

“They have some talented kids,” CV head coach Deric Longan said. “It was a good early test for us.”

What Longan described as “a quirky play” at the end of the first quarter helped boost Wyandotte. It occurred when Wyandotte missed a half-court shot, but made the follow-up.

“That was a little momentum swing early,” Longan said. “I’m surprised we didn’t respond differently. … Early on in the season a little adversity can be a good thing.”

Jade Upton tallied a season-high 26 points to lead CV, followed by Sammi Gilbreath, seven; Kensly Foreman, five; Libby Thompson; four; and Chloe Scherman, four.

Friday’s game against the visiting Caney Valley (Kan.) Lady Pups also will be Homecoming.

GIRLS: Copan 45, Cedar Vale-Dexter 27

Two freshmen came up big for Copan. Zoey Secondine ripped the nets with 13 points and Jayden Purdum pulled down nine boards to help energize the Lady Hornets (1-3).

Rounding out Copan’s scoring list were: Elyzabeth Odum, seven points; Purdum, six; Kylee Cobb, six; Kamryn Van, five; Rylee Vanschuyver, three; Faith Weatherspoon, three; and Addy Hunter, two.

Following a frantic first half — which saw the Kansas squad move into the lead, 14-13 — Copan slowed down and played more under control in the second half, Copan head coach Kristy Bryan said.

“We scored several layups on lead-out passes,” she said. “Our defense was a little better.”

Copan made 18 steals and recorded just one less rebound.

On Thursday, Copan plays in the 7 p.m. semifinal against Quapaw.
