Round Hot Dogs Exist and We're Not Sure How to Feel About It

In the never-ending debate of what is and what is not a sandwich, the hot dog continues to be a head-scratching contender. After all, it’s sandwiched between a bun! Isn’t that enough evidence? Or does it take a little bit more effort than that (like Ree Drummond's decked-out ham sandwich).

Although the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (yes, that’s a real thing) famously deemed a hot dog not a sandwich in 2015, there’s one product that could throw the whole debate into a tailspin.

Meet Rastelli’s Round Dog, a.k.a flat, hamburger-shaped hot dogs. If you’ve ever run out of hot dog buns at a barbecue and had to improvise with a hamburger bun instead, you'll probably get the inspiration behind the idea. That was actually the exact scenario that pushed Tony Luke Jr., the creator and owner of popular cheesesteak chain Tony Luke’s, to invent these circular dogs.

Just like the name suggests, these are essentially hot dogs that take the shape of a burger. Now if you’re saying to yourself, that just sounds like bologna, Tony is already a step ahead of you. He made sure that the shape was something unique, which is how he wound up with the ridged edges that are ideal for the grill.

And, since these patties are a little bigger than your usual dog, they’ll leave you feeling fuller.

Probably the biggest draw of these curiosities is that their surface area allows for more topping opportunities that are much less likely to fall off. Try them with your favorite hot dog or burger add-ons!

If you’re interested in giving them a shot, you can purchase them now exclusively from QVC.

It’s pricey at $83.50 for a 24-pack. But hey, why not have some fun with your first barbecue of the year!
