Round Rock hospital doubling in size

Ascension Seton Williamson Medical Center in Round Rock is about to almost double in size.

A $230 million investment will build a second six-story tower onto the hospital, adding an additional 160 beds to the hospital that now has 181 beds. It also will add two more operating rooms, bringing that number to 10. A dozen observation rooms will be added for people who come to the emergency department and don't need to be admitted but need to stay longer for observation.

The addition is expected to add 400 jobs to the hospital at 201 Seton Parkway in Round Rock.

“As the greater Round Rock area has experienced substantial growth, this expansion will allow us to meet the increased need for medical and surgical services, particularly for cardiovascular, neurology and orthopedic health in our community," said Andrew Gnann, president of Ascension Seton Williamson.

The expected date of completion has not been announced.

Round Rock's population grew 19.6% from 2010 to 2020, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Williamson County's population grew 44% in that time.

In addition to adding 216,000 square feet to the hospital, the expansion will add a 34,000-square-foot medical plaza at 301 Seton Parkway. That plaza will include outpatient wound care, cardiac rehabilitation and pediatric rehabilitation services.

The hospital had 64,000 patient visits in 2022, a 13% increase from the previous year.

Ascension Seton Williamson is not the only hospital in Williamson County experiencing growth.

Baylor Scott & White Round Rock is also doubling in size with a $220 million expansion that will add a neonatal intensive care unit to the hospital as well as expand the emergency department, add surgical suites and add more beds. It saw a 30% increase in patient visits in the past five years.

St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center is adding two floors to an existing tower that will add another 34 beds 0n one floor with room for expansion on the other. The $53.1 million expansion is also adding two more operating rooms with room for another two in the future.

St. David's North Austin Medical Center just added 30 beds to its now 97 bed neonatal intensive care unit and added a new tower to its women's center in August.

St. David's HealthCare is also building a hospital in Leander and a mental health hospital next to the North Austin Medical Center.

Dell Children's Medical Center opened a second hospital in North Austin in April at 9010 N. Lake Creek Parkway. Texas Children's Hospital is opening its first hospital outside of the Houston area on Feb. 1 at 9835 N. Lake Creek Parkway in Northwest Austin.
