Round Rock police are warning residents of an online scam appearing to be from online retailers.

Officials said the scam appears to residents when they click on links that seem to be from official online retailers. Officials said that when residents click on the link, they receive an alert that appears to be from Microsoft's Defenders antivirus software.

The alert encourages people to install the software and call technical support. Police are encouraging residents to not call the number or follow any instructions on the alert.

The Round Rock Police Department offers the following recommendations for residents to recognize scams:

  • Only visit secure websites by ensuring they have "https" in their address bar

  • Never call a phone number given to you unsolicited

  • Never pay someone who insists on payment from cryptocurrency, a wire transfer service or gift card

  • Look out for grammar errors as phishing messages are often poorly written
