Round Rock, Pflugerville school districts cancel classes for third day amid ice storm

The Pflugerville and Round Rock school districts will remain closed through Thursday due to ongoing winter weather conditions in the area.

Although the winter storm warning is in effect for the Austin metro area and the Hill Country until 6 a.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service, the districts said they would close for a third to ensure the safety of students and staff in lights of the ongoing power outages and road conditions.

The heaviest round of freezing rain passed through the Austin metro area overnight and early Wednesday morning, but lighter ice accumulations are expected to continue throughout the day until warmer temperatures come Thursday.

Round Rock district officials said the district has two days of instructional minutes set aside for cancelations to meet state requirements but will explore the option to make up or waive the third day of cancelled classes and any other bad weather days that may happen throughout the year.

All Pflugerville city facilities will remain close through Thursday as well. Facilities include City Hall offices, utility billing, the Pflugerville Public Library, the Recreation Center, Pflugerville Animal Welfare Services, Municipal Court and the Justice Center.

Both cities experienced power outages due to debris and ice on power lines. At 8 a.m. Wednesday, Austin Energy reported 8,362 Pflugerville customers without power. Oncor reporter 1,792 Pflugerville customers and 7,148 Round Rock customers without power.
