A round-up of the top tweets in 2020, according to Twitter

It’s possible not many people want to re-live 2020 because, for the most part, it looked like this:

Nonetheless, sometimes it’s funny to look back on the year and revisit the memes, celebrities and TV shows of yore. Like, remember when everyone was talking about the subway singer? That was this year.

Twitter just released its 2020 data and we at In The Know took a walk down memory lane to examine what everyone was tweeting about throughout this wretched year.

Celebrities

Most tweeted about celebrities:

  1. BTS

  2. Kobe Bryant

  3. LeBron James

  4. Kanye West

  5. Beyoncé

It’s no surprise that BTS, the megapopular seven-member South Korean pop band, was the most-tweeted-about artist — considering the group dropped two big singles this year that reached the Billboard Global 200.

Kobe Bryant, his daughter and six others were killed in a helicopter crash in mid-January, which devastated fans all over the world.

Kanye West, if you’ve already forgotten, is presumably ranked so highly due to his controversial campaign for president.

Creators with the most follower growth:

  2. Charli D’Amelio

  3. James Charles

  4. Addison Rae

  5. Jeffree Star

Does anyone remember a time when they didn’t know who the D’Amelio sisters were? The older D’Amelio exploded with followers this year after finding success on TikTok — although there was a time when everyone thought she was about to lose everything.

Pop Culture

Most tweeted about TV shows:

  1. The Last Dance

  2. Tiger King

  3. The Bachelor

  4. Saturday Night Live

  5. The Daily Show with Trevor Noah

The Last Dance followed Michael Jordan’s career in the ’90s with the Chicago Bulls. ESPN aired the 10 episodes in mid-April before Netflix picked up the series in July.

The rise and fall of Tiger King feels like a fever dream. The release of the bizarre documentary series on Netflix was timed perfectly with the start of quarantine at the end of March.

While the news seemed to be a mess almost every day, it looks like Twitter users were gravitating towards more lighthearted content with Saturday Night Live and The Daily Show.

  5. The Masked Singer

90 Day Fiancé wrapped its seventh season in May and was averaging 2 million same-day viewers. Even if you haven’t caught up or seen a single episode, you still know exactly who Big Ed is.

Trends

This was the year everyone learned how to bake bread — and had to talk about it on Twitter. There was a 41 percent increase in conversations around “recipes” on the platform.

At one point “everything was cake,” which explains why the cake emoji increased in usage 44 percent year over year on Twitter.

In terms of the most liked tweets of the year, two of them were written by former president Barack Obama, two of them were in response to the election results and two of them were celebrating users who announced they were cancer-free.
