Roundup: 1 dies in Santa Paula crash; man stabbed, robbed in Fillmore

1 killed in crash near Santa Paula

A Santa Paula woman was killed in a three-vehicle crash on Highway 126 east of Santa Paula Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The collision was reported around 2:35 p.m. on the westbound 126 east of Boosey Road, according to Officer Jorge Alfaro of the California Highway Patrol.

The woman was identified Tuesday afternoon as Tatiana Torres, 22, of Santa Paula, according to the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office. CHP officials previously provided a different age.

Torres had been driving eastbound in a Mercury SUV, CHP officials said in a news release Tuesday morning. She lost control for unknown reasons and traveled into oncoming traffic in the westbound lanes.

The Mercury first sideswiped a 2002 Honda Civic, the CHP's preliminary investigation found, then continued out of control, striking a 2022 Honda Civic. The driver in the sideswiped older Honda, a 19-year-old Fillmore woman, wasn't injured.

Two people in the second Honda were hurt. The driver, a 42-year-old Fillmore woman, suffered internal abdominal bleeding and was transported to Ventura County Medical Center with major injuries, the CHP reported. Her passenger, a 30-year-old Santa Paula woman, was taken to the same hospital with injuries described as minor, including lacerations to the elbow and hip.

Torres was declared dead at the scene.

Weather conditions were described as cold, rainy and wet. The incident closed lanes for a time.

CHP investigators are still determining the sequence of events, according to Tuesday's release.

The crash remains under investigation. Witnesses are asked to call the CHP's Ventura-area office during business hours at 805-662-2640.

Man stabbed in apparent Fillmore robbery

A man was allegedly stabbed and robbed in Fillmore Sunday night after he was confronted by two people wearing masks.

The victim, a 49-year-old Fillmore man, was walking in the 100 block of Chambersburg Road shortly before 7 p.m. when he was approached by a dark-colored sedan traveling southbound on the road, said Ventura County Sheriff's Capt. Greg Gibson. The city of Fillmore contracts police services with the sheriff's office.

Two male suspects were in the sedan. They got out of the car and reportedly demanded money from the victim, authorities said.

When the victim told the two he had no money, they stabbed him in the abdomen and thigh and stole his jewelry, Gibson said. The man was taken to the hospital for wounds that weren't life-threatening. He has since been released from the hospital, sheriff's officials said in a news release Tuesday.

After the robbery, the suspects drove away along southbound Chambersburg. The neighborhood where the incident took place is residential with equestrian trails across the Santa Clara River, not far from Bardsdale.

Gibson did not know a value for the jewelry taken. He said initial information indicated the incident was a random act of violence.

As of midday Tuesday, no arrests had been made. The sheriff's major crimes unit, which is investigating, believes the robbery may have been seen by passing motorists and requested the public's help.
