Roundup: Cold to continue, shooting suspect charged, more news

Here's a roundup of recent incidents and announcements from Ventura County agencies:

Cold temperatures to last through Wednesday

The Ventura County cold wave is expected to last over the next several days as temperatures remain about 10 degrees below normal, the National Weather Service said.

Through Wednesday, the forecast calls for temperatures to stay in the mid-30s to low-40s at night in coastal and valley areas. They are expected to rise to the high 50s during the day.

Although not as significant as last week's rainfall, more precipitation is predicted. Forecasters expect another half inch to an inch of rain in the coastal and valley areas and 1-2 inches in the mountains through Wednesday evening.

Local communities got healthy doses of rain from last Thursday to 9 a.m. Sunday, the weather service reported.

Some of the high points in rounded figures: 3.3 inches at La Conchita, 3.5 inches at CSU Channel Islands, 3 inches at the National Weather Service office in Oxnard, 3 inches in Ventura, 6.1 inches in Thousand Oaks, 5 inches in Newbury Park, 3.5 inches in Moorpark, 3.4 inches in Simi Valley, and about 4 inches in both Fillmore and Santa Paula. Ojai trailed at almost 2.5 inches.

About 6.7 inches was recorded at Westlake Village. Almost 11 inches was measured at the Matilija Dam.

It's not expected to be the end for snowfall either following a week when slopes rising over towns and fields were suddenly covered in white. Most areas in the mountains can expect another 4 to 10 inches of snow through Wednesday evening, meteorologist Rich Thompson said.

Charges filed in Ventura murder case

County prosecutors filed a murder charge Friday against a Santa Paula man in the death of Joe Ramirez of Ventura.

Jose Emanuel Posadas, 21, was also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Posadas is accused of shooting the 25-year-old Ramirez on Feb. 19 at a home on Mimosa Street in Ventura. The two reportedly had a verbal argument before the shooting. Posadas then fled to a home in SantaPaula, where he was arrested three days later, officials said.

Arraignment for the defendant is scheduled March 24. He remained in custody without bail Sunday in the main jail in Ventura, according to jail records.

House fire reported in Santa Paula

A house caught fire over the weekend in Santa Paula, displacing an unknown number of residents, officials confirmed Sunday.

The fire was reported late Saturday shortly before midnight in the 700 block of East Virginia Terrace, north of the downtown area. The blaze was extinguished in a short amount of time, a spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department said.

Spokesman Andy VanSciver did not not know the cause of the fire but said it was confined to the kitchen. He knew of no injuries.
