Roundup Fire ignites south of Apple Valley

Local firefighters spent their Fourth of July battling the Roundup Fire, which reached 34 acres south of Apple Valley.

Ground crews responded to the vegetation fire reported at 11:50 a.m. in Rattlesnake Canyon, south of Roundup Way and Kiowa Road in the Mariana Ranchos. San Bernardino County Fire, Cal Fire, Apple Valley Fire, sheriff’s department, and San Bernardino National Forest personnel responded to the blaze.

Smoke from the fire was visible throughout portions of the Victor Valley.

By 1:35 p.m., the fire was reported at about 31 acres, according to the state’s Fire Integrated Real Time Intelligence System. Roughly two hours later, Cal Fire reported that the fire was mapped at 34 acres, with 20% containment.

At 6:21 p.m., Cal Fire stated that the fire was 80% contained and that personnel will be in the area continuing to strengthen containment lines over the next several hours. No further updates will be made unless conditions change

No structures were threatened, according to firefighters.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by Cal Fire law enforcement. Eleven fire engines, four water tenders, two crews, two helicopters, and seven overhead personnel were assigned to the fire.
