Roundup: Four girls hoops teams reach sectional finals

ZANESVILLE — Maysville made Zanesville sweat for three quarters of its Division II sectional game on Wednesday night.

The underdog Panthers, with just four wins, got as close as one point in the third quarter. But the host Lady Devils, the No. 9 seed, finally threw the knockout punch, dominating the final 10 minutes to pull away for a 56-39 win at Winland Memorial Gymnasium.

With top scorer Jersey Draughn out with a knee injury, classmate Kandrea Sowers led three players in double figures with a game-high 25 points with eight rebounds to pace the Lady Devils.

Sowers, a guard, also assisted on three baskets in the fourth quarter, when Jada Seyfried and Ta'Myah Taylor had six of their 11 points.

Zanesville led 13-4 after a quarter, 25-16 at halftime and 39-26 entering the fourth. It had an 8-0 run in the third.

Taelyn Dickinson's 11 points paced Maysville (4-19), which had a 9-0 run in the second quarter. The Panthers hit 16 of 21 free throws and had nine players score, as Jerzei Blackketter had six points and Miley Fulkerson and Emerson Williams five.

Zanesville (10-13) advanced to play at No. 2-seed John Glenn at 1 p.m. Saturday for a district berth.

Philo 44, Cadiz Harrison Central 31: The Dement girls had the long ball working in the Electrics' Division II sectional in Harrison County.

Olivia Dement knocked down four 3-pointers — all before halftime — and sister Bailey added a pair, as they combined for 30 of Philo's points in a game it led just 31-28 entering the fourth quarter.

Bailey Dement and Olivia Dement combined for 5-of-6 free-throw shooting in the final frame, while Caitlin Rose muscled for six of her eight points on three field goals. Bailey Dement, who also had five rebounds and four steals, finished 6-of-10 at the line.

After yielding 18 second-quarter points in falling behind 25-17 at the half, the Electrics surrendered just six points and two field goals in the second half.

Kennedy Rinkes had six rebounds and Rose five blocked shots for Philo, which hit 15 of 49 field goals, including 6 of 23 3-pointers.

Maddy Butler scored eight points and Emma Fischer and Maddie Sedgmer six for Harrison Central.

Philo (13-10) advances to play No. 3 seed Wintersville Indian Creek (18-5), which rolled to a 51-27 win against No. 15 Gnadenhutten Indian Valley, at 1 p.m. Saturday in Wintersville for a district berth.

The winner plays either top-seeded Millersburg West Holmes or No. 11 seed Dover in the district semifinals.

Dover 41, Morgan 32: Ava Zobel hit 12 of 18 free throws in a game-high 16 points for the visiting Crimson Tornadoes, who advanced in the Division II sectional tournament.

Morgan trailed, 21-11, at the half after Dover hit a pair of first-quarter 3s, but Odessa Smith rattled off 10 straight Raider points to start the third quarter. Myleigh Williams' basket in the final minute tied the game at 23 entering the fourth.

Dover iced the game at the line, hitting 13 of 18 in the final quarter as Zobel was 7-of-8 and Carley Noretto 4-of-6.

Morgan ended a 10-13 season.

Division III

West Muskingum 76, Richmond Edison 20: Eleven players scored for the Tornadoes, who led 29-2 after a quarter in a Division III sectional game in Falls Township.

Taylor Spung scored 10 of her game-high 16 points in the first half and Debra Allen hit a pair of first-quarter 3s for West. Allen, Teriauna Bradford and Caitlyn Drake had 12 points for the winners.

West led 48-6 at halftime and 63-12 after three quarters.

West (17-6) will host No. 5 seed Meadowbrook (15-8) at 1 p.m. on Saturday for a district berth. The Colts topped No. 8 seed Bellaire, 44-37.

Bidwell River Valley 52, Crooksville 32: Hayley Edwards hit a pait of 3s among her 14 points, as the host Raiders jumped ahead 16-8 and never looked back in a Southeast District sectional game.

Kallie Burger hit two 3s in the second quarter among her 12 points for River Valley, which extended its lead to 33-12 at halftime and 40-24 entering the fourth.

Rylee Chamberlin scored seven of her team-high 11 points in the third quarter and Lexi Van Meter added nine points for Crooksville. Brynn Lundell chipped in eight markers.

Crooksville finished 2-21.

Bowling

Maysville bowlers 7th in sectional: Maysville shot 3,519 to place seven of 23 teams in the Division II sectional at St. Clair Lanes in St. Clairsville.

The Panthers finished just eight pins out of the top six, which qualified to the district at Legacy Lanes.

Dallas Quinn shot 536 and Jacob Miller 519 for Maysville, while Mat Harper added 479. The Panthers shot 1,107 in Baker format.

Bowerston Conotton Valley was first and River View second. The Black Bears totaled 3,755, as Carter Hammersley shot 614, Cam Collopy 559, Tyler Bryan 538 and Carson Lebeau 510.

Officials Hall of Fame

The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced 14 state officials will join the Hall of Fame. Zanesville Mayor Don Mason was recognized for his contributions to wrestling.

Bill Mason of Granville was named for basketball and lacrosse, Michael Rauch from Beverly was recognized for basketball and Newark's John Whitson will be honored for football, basketball and baseball to highlight officials for near the area.

The induction banquet will be held June 24 at the Hilton Polaris in Columbus.
