Roundup: GC boys cross country team captures John Sample Invitational title; Lady Eagles 7th

Oct. 3—GROVE CITY — The Grove City boys captured the team title on Saturday and the GC girls placed 7th at the 21st annual John Sample Invitational at Memorial Park.

The Eagles copped the title with 43 team points while South Fayette placed 2nd with a 97.

Jake Borgesi of South Fayette captured the individual title in a time of 16:22.

For Grove City, Josh Jones (16:32) placed 2nd, Caleb Hawke (16:38) was 4th, Quinn McKnight (16:44) finished 8th, MJ Pottinger (17:04) placed 11th, Justice Brown (17:16) took 18th, and Isaiah Stauff (17:33) finished 23rd.

South Fayette (66) won the girls team title, Beaver Area (84) placed 2nd and the Lady Eagles (158) were 7th.

Shaler Area's Samantha Hennen won the individual title in a time of 18:30.

Grove City's Abby Steffler (19:57) finished 6th and Abbey Nichols (21:18) placed 21st.

Greenville's Megan Ickes placed 26th in a time of 21:43.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Coach Carole O'Dell's West Middlesex High volleyball team hosted a tri-match on Saturday and picked up wins over Iroquois and Wilmington. The Reds are now 9-2.

WM defeated Iroquois, 28-26, 25-18, 25-20 and beat Wilmington, 25-13, 25-19, 25-21. The Hounds also swept Iroquois, 25-21, 25-14, 25-22.

FOOTBALL

* Wilmington 28, Sharpsville 27 — At McCracken Field Friday night, Coach Brandon Phillian's Hounds (4-0, 4-1) rallied from a 21-0 deficit to earn the Region 1 win over the Blue Devils (1-2, 3-3).

Sharpsville jumped out to the 21-0 lead on a trio of touchdown passes from Caullin Summers to Garen Levis. Liam Campbell converted the extra-point kicks.

Wilmington cut the lead to 21-7 in the 2nd quarter on a 22-yard TD pass from Tuff McConahy to Luke Edwards and James Winters' PAT.

The Greyhounds tied the game 21-all in the 3rd quarter on a pair of touchdown tosses. Cole McCallister threw an 87-yard TD pass to Tyler Mikulin and a 16-yard scoring strike to McConahy. Winters converted both exta-point kicks.

The Blue Devils took a 27-21 lead in the 4th quarter when Summers and Levis connected again on a 7-yard TD pass. The extra-point kick attempt was blocked.

The Hounds tied the game 27-all on a 14-yard touchdown run by Ben Miller. Winters booted the PAT to lift Wilmington to the 28-27 win.

Miller (11-76) and Gage DeCaprio (11-65) led the Hounds' ground game. McCallister was 2-of-2 for 103 yards while McConahy went 6-of-16 for 67 yards with 1 pick. Mikulin caught 3 passes for 113 yards.

Summers was 16-of-31 for 276 yards with the 4 TD tosses and 1 interception for Sharpsville. He also rushed for 35 yards on 10 carries. Levis caught 9 passes for 175 yards.

* Slippery Rock 49, Conneaut (Ohio) 14 — At Joslin Field in Conneautville Friday night, the Rockets (2-0, 4-0) remained undefeated with the Region 3 win over the Spartans (0-3, 3-4).

William Mokel threw for 189 yards and 3 touchdown passes to John Sabo, Brett Galcik rushed for 132 yards and a score, and Ryan Montgomery had a TD run and a pick-6.

Conneaut led 14-7 at the end of the 1st quarter, but the Rockets would score 42 unanswered points in the win.

Mokel and Sabo connected on TD tosses of 25, 9, and 88 yards. Montgomery had a 15-yard touchdown run and returned an interception 46 yards for a score. Galcik scored on a 1-yard run.

Mokel was 8-of-17 for 189 yards with the 3 TD tosses and 2 interceptions. Galcik reached 132 rushing yards on 16 carries. Sabo had a huge night in receiving with 4 grabs for 164 yards.

Zack Rice had 19- and 6-yard touchdown runs for Conneaut.
