Roundup: GC softball rolls past Oilers; Muskies defeat Hornets

Apr. 30—SOFTBALL

* Grove City 15, Oil City 5 (6 inn.) — At Memorial Park in Grove City, Cana Severson collected two singles and drove in three runs and Jordan Filer tripled, singled twice, and had two RBIs to power the Eagles to the Region 4 victory.

Also for GC, Abby Geiger smacked a solo homer and singled, Morgan Eaton doubled, Courtney Saylor singled and drove in two runs, Logan Jones contributed two singles and two RBIs, Rylie Eaton singled and drove in a pair of runs, and Johanna Smiley added an RBI single.

Jones went the distance on the mound for the Eagles. She had three strikeouts, two walks, and gave upi seven hits.

Nyssa Hanlon pitched for Oil City. She fanned three batters, issued four walks, and gave up 13 hits.

Maddy Marczak led the Oilers at the plate with a home run, a double, and three RBIs and L. Armich added two singles.

* Jamestown 10, Hickory 0 (5 inn.) — At Jamestown, Miranda Biles fired a two-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks and Liz Kammerdiner homered, singled, and drove in four runs as the Muskies shut out the Hornets.

Leona Brown had three singles and two RBIs for Jamestown, Kylie Matters and Miranda Biles both singled and drove in a run, and Morgan Bercis contributed a pair of singles and an RBI.

Hallie Miller (2 1/3 innings) and Madeline Myers pitched for Hickory. They combined on four strikeouts, three walks, and gave up 10 hits.

Miller and Kaitlyn Gilliland had singles for Hickory.

* Franklin 12, Sharon 0 (5 inn.) — At Wengler Field in Sharon Saturday, Trinity Edge fired a one-hitter with eight strikeouts and two walks and Gabriella Laderer belted three home runs and drove in four runs as the undefeated Knights (12-0) captured the Region 4 win.

Rilee Hanna doubled and ripped two singles for Franklin, Edge and Kirsten Hicks had two singles each, and Gabriella Wimer and Sydni Hoobler both singled and drove in a pair of runs.

Claire Bodien went the distance on the mound for Sharon. She struck out six batters, issued no walks, and gave up seven earned runs on 15 hits.

Miranda Metro singled for the Tigers.

* Corry 11, Slippery Rock 1 (5 inn.) — At Corry, the Beavers rolled in the Region 4 contest against the Rockets.

Haylee Dyne fired a one-hitter and struck out five batters for Corry.

Alli Goodwill, Kiran Bugbee, and Reghan Trask drove in two runs each for the Beavers.

Ciana D'Antoni suffered the mound loss for Slippery Rock. She had three strikeouts.

* Mercer 16, Kennedy Catholic 0 — At Hermitage, Coach Dan Davis' Mustangs picked up the Region 1 win.

Samantha Gamble earned the win. She retired all 12 batters she faced.

No other stats were reported to The Herald.

* Reynolds 14, Lakeview 1 (5 inn.) — At Stoneboro, the Raiders plated eight runs in the top of the first inning en route to the Region 1 win.

Kaylee Diefenderfer and Halyn Cawthorne had four hits each for Reynolds, which was coming off Friday's big 3-1 win over Sharpsville. Mackenzie Herman had two hits and three RBIs, Marissa Hillyer drove in three runs, and Rylee Gearhart had two RBIs.

Cawthorne went the distance on the mound for Reynolds. She struck out seven batters.

Reagan Booher and Faith Cox pitched for Lakeview. They struck out three batters.

* Sharpsville 21, Farrell 1 (3 inn.) — At Farrell, the Lady Devils banged out 18 hits in the Region 1 win over the Steelers.

Jordan Brest threw a one-hitter with two strikeouts and one walk for Sharpsville. At the plate, she doubled and drove in a pair of runs.

Allison White doubled, singled, and drove in three runs for the Devils, Avery McFeaters had a double, two singles, and four RBIs, Paige Yarian collected two singles and three RBIs, and Brooklynn Atwell doubled, singled, and drove in a pair.

Also for Sharpsville, Keeley Whitaker doubled, singled, and had one RBI, Kayleigh Stinedurf had a two-bagger and an RBI, and Lily Palko, Alli Davis, Reagan Knicely, and Lexi Hast all singled and drove in a run.

Maria Harrison doubled and drove in a run for Farrell. On the mound, she struck out two, walked four, and gave up 18 hits.

BASEBALL

* Kennedy Catholic 9, Reynolds 8 — At Hermitage, the Raiders scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning, but couldn't tie it up as the Golden Eagles went on to capture the Region 1 win.

Stargell Fuhr (4 2/3 innings), Nick Ondo (1 1/3), and Remington Hart pitched for KC. The trio struck out 12 batters, walked five, and allowed seven hits.

Offensively for the Golden Eagles, Hart doubled and drove in three runs, Fuhr had two singles and two RBIs, Thomas Malvar ripped a pair of singles, Cord Pocza doubled and drove in a run, and Riley Mastowski added two singles and three RBIs.

Ryan Broadwater (two innings) and Haden Obenrader pitched for Reynolds. They fanned two batters, walked six, and surrendered 10 hits.

Nolan Reichard led the Raiders at the plate. He hit a pair of doubles, singled, and drove in two runs. Luka Pantelic singled and had an RBI.

* Mercyhurst Prep 4, Grove City 3 — At Erie, the Eagles fell behind 4-0 and were able to score three runs in the top of the fifth inning, but that was as close as the non-region game would get.

Ryan Gates threw a complete-game six-hitter for the Region 4 Lakers with six strikeouts and two walks.

Mike Nelligan hit two singles for Mercyhurst Prep and Gates was credited with an RBI.

Michael Earman (three innings) and Maddox Bell threw a three-hitter for Grove City. Earman fanned four, walked two, and gave up three runs on three hits. Bell issued one walk and gave up the other run.

At the plate, Earman doubled and drove in a pair of runs and Landon Haggart added two singles and an RBI.

TRACK & FIELD

Franklin Invitational

The Sharpsville and West Middlesex teams competed in the 15th annual Franklin Invite on Saturday.

Sharpsville girls: Macie Steiner and Liva Vocaire led the way for the Devils. Steiner won the 300 hurdles (49.67) and ran the opening legs on the first-place 400 relay team (52.74) and second-place 1600 relay squad (4:35.95). Vocaire won the long (16-4) and triple jumps (33-2).

Steiner's 400 relay teammates were Savannah Hassan, Riley Tighe, and Tamya Hubbard and her 1600-meter relay teammates were Ryleigh Fry, Lillian Morrison, and Haley White.

Hubbard took first place in the 100-meter dash (12.93), Tighe was second in the 200 (27.43) and fourth in the 100 (13.22), White finished sixth in the 400 (1:08.55) and seventh in the 200 (29.67), and Hassan finished eighth in the 100 (13.84).

Sharpsville's 3200 relay team (no names submitted) finished third in a time of 12:38.44.

Earning fourth-place finishes were Morrison in the long jump (15-2 1/2) and Jessica Divens in the javelin (92-0).

WM girls: Lia Bartholomew finished third in the 3200 (12:13.16) and ran the anchor leg on the fifth-place 1600-meter relay team that clocked in at 4:52.39. Her teammates were Mercedes McNutt, Ella Bartholomew, and Abby Keckler.

Keckler also placed fourth in the 300 hurdles (54.58) while Ella Barthomew took seventh in both the 300 hurdles (57.39) and 1600 (6:08.53).

Phoebe Wilson and Ali Baker earned sixth-place finishes for the Reds — Wilson in the shot put (29-2) and Baker in the discus (86-1).

Sharpsville Boys: Braedon Summers captured first place in the 400 in 53.93, second in the 200 (23.50), and third in the 100 (11.5).

Zack Tedrow placed in four events. He took second in the long jump (19-7) and 1600 relay (3:48.60), third in the high jump (5-5), and fifth in the 100 (11.64). His 1600 relay mates were Jonathan Bissell, Chance Miller, and Summers.

Miller also finished third in the 400 in a time of 54.61 and clocked in at 24.70 in the 200 for sixth place. Also, Kellen DeJulia placed eighth in the 1600-meter run (5:23.89).

WM Boys: Dennis Jones placed first in the 800 (2:10.46) and third in the 1600 (5:00.33) and Ben Wilms captured the high jump title (5-7) to lead the Big Reds. Both were also part of the 1600 relay foursome to finish sixth in 4:00.56. Their teammates were Ashton Pierce and Nick Varga.

Colby Johnson finished second in the 110 hurdles (17.28) and Varga placed fourth in the 400 (55.78).

Christian Snyder took sixth in the 110 hurdles (18.20), Sam Negrea finished sixth in the discus (124-9), and Roman Jones placed eighth in the pole vault (8-0).

McDowell Invitational

Lakeview competed in Saturday's 35th annual McDowell Invite in Erie.

Girls: Lydia Reed won the 100-meter dash in a time of 13.29 and placed second long jump (15-5 3/4). Laci Redfoot finished second in the 100 hurdles (16.84) and third in the 300 hurdles (50.10).

Mikayla Montgomery took second in the 800 (2:29.68) and Erika McGowan was runner-up in the pole vault (9-6). Jordan Redfoot finished fourth in the 100 hurdles (17.8) and sixth in the 300 hurdles (51.98).

Taylor McKean earned seventh-place finishes in both the 100 (13.85) and 200 (28.76) while Aubrey Hogue took eighth in the 1600 (6:13.95) and Susi Shetler was eighth in the javelin (84-2).

The 1600-meter relay team placed first in 4:21.59, the 3200 relay team finished third (10:45.73), and the 400 relay squad placed fourth in 53.07. Names were not submitted to The Herald and were not posted on penntrackxc.com.

Boys: Danick Hinkson earned a second-place finish in 11.81 and Gavin Murdock placed second in the 300 hurdles (41.52) and seventh in the long jump (20-1).

Lane Smith posted a pair of fourth-place finishes in the high jump (5-7) and javelin (135-10), Carter Williams was fifth in the 400 (54.42), Brayden Sample took seventh in the 400 (55.75), and Nicholas Savolskis was seventh in the pole vault (9-6).

Lakeview's 1600-meter relay team placed first in 3:36.61, while the 400 relay (45.48) and 3200 relay (8:59) both placed sixth. No names were submitted.
