Apr. 30—BOYS TENNIS

— Greenville 3, Hickory 2 — At Greenville, the Hornets completed Region 1 play on Friday by dropping a close match to the Trojans.

Isaac Hightree and Finn Butcher captured singles wins for the Trojans and Saku Fujuta and Zach Morgan teamed up for a win at No. 2 doubles. Jacob Jarzab won at first singles for Hickory and Paul Spielvogle-Remy Abalos won at first doubles.

Both teams entered the match with identical 6-1 region records. Greenville locked up second place with the win and qualifies for the District 10 Team Championships at Westwood Racquet Club in Erie on May 13.

"Our entire coaching staff is so proud of the way our team played this season and the progress they made since that first day of practice," said Hickory co-coach Ed Newmeyer. "Unfortunately, we came up just a little short. We wish coach (Ken) Stitt and his players all the best at the district team championships."

Singles: Jarzab (H) def. Anthony Gentile, 6-0, 6-2; Hightree (G) def. Blake Herring, 6-4, 6-1; Butcher (G) def. CJ Myers, 6-0, 6-0. Doubles: Spielvogle-Abalos (H) def. Bobby Barr-Alex Harcourt, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2; Fujita-Morgan (G) def. Greg Buell-David Tuttle, 6-2, 6-4.

BASEBALL

— West Middlesex 9, Wilmington 7 — At New Wilmington, the Hounds plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but fell short as the Big Reds picked up the Region 1 victory. It was the fourth straight loss for the Hounds.

Richie Preston (five innings) and Devin Gruver pitched for West Middlesex. The duo struck out six batters, walked eight, and gave up nine hits.

Rocky Serafino (two innings), Issac Schleich (three), and Garrett Heller split time on the mound for the Hounds. The trio combined on 13 strikeouts, walked two, and gave up 11 hits.

Offensively for WM, Preston had two doubles and two RBIs, Kyle Hurley belted a solo home run, Hunter Hoffman doubled, singled, and drove in a run, Julian Trott doubled and drove in a pair of runs, Blaise Fox and Eric Nehlen both doubled, Gruver collected two singles, and Bowen Briggs singled and drove in a run.

For Wilmington, Dom Serafino and Tyler Mikulin had two singles each, Shane Book ripped two singles and drove in two runs, Schleich and Cole McCallister both singled and drove in a run, and Heller and Dylan Batley had one RBI each.

— Franklin 20, Grove City 13 — At Forese Field in Grove City, the Region 2 Eagles led 10-6 after four innings of play, but the Region 4 Knights scored 10 runs in the top of the fifth frame en route to the win.

Kyle Alexander led Franklin at the plate by hitting a home run, double, two singles, and driving in eight runs while Vanderbilt recruit Luke Guth had three singles and two RBIs.

Also for the Knights, Noah Kockler collected four singles and an RBI, Caleb Doyle contributed a double, two singles, and two RBIs, Aidan McCracken doubled, singled, and drove in three, and Carson Wible added three singles and two RBIs.

Ethan Nightingale (3 1/3 innings) and Bolan pitched for Franklin. They combined on 11 strikeouts, five walks, and gave up 11 hits.

Michael Earman led Grove City at the dish with two doubles and four RBIs, Hayden McCreadie doubled and drove in a pair of runs, Kamden Martin singled and had two RBIs, John Hake singled three times, Coldan Barr singled and drove in a run, Landon Haggart contributed three singles and an RBI, and Luke Tubbs was credited with two RBIs.

Ethan Orr, Hake, Haggart, and Dylan McElhinney pitched for the Eagles. They struck out four batters, issued four walks, and gave up 21 hits.

— Greenville 8, Lakeview 5 — At Stoneboro, the Trojans led 5-1 after two innings and were up 8-1 before Lakeview scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth, but that was as close as it would get as Greenville picked up a non-region win.

Collin Wilson homered and singled for Region 2 Greenville, Soren Hedderick and Nick Solderich had two singles each, and Brayden Porter doubled and singled.

Jack Strausser pitched 5 2/3 innings for the Trojans and Hedderick went 1 1/3 for the save. Strausser had five strikeouts, three walks, and gave up all five runs on eight hits.

For Region 1 Lakeview, Cody Fagley had two singles and an RBI and Ted Shillito and Brody Snyder each singled and drove in a run.

Evan Reiser (4 1/3 innings), Chris Mong (2), and Chase Hostetler. They fanned seven batters, issued two walks, and gave up 12 hits.

— Sharpsville 17, Jamestown 0 (3 inn.) — At Jamestown, Stephen Tarnoci struck out seven batters, issued no walks, and gave up no hits in the Region 1 win over the Muskies.

Sharpsville banged out 12 hits and Jamestown committed six errors in the game.

James Thomas led the Blue Devils at the plate with a double, single, and five RBIs. Tarnoci ripped two doubles and drove in a pair of runs and Dylan Candiotti doubled and drove in three runs.

Also for Sharpsville, Luke Distler and Jack Leipheimer had two singles each and an RBI, Brock Lenzi and Eli Eckles each singled and drove in two, and David Moyer had a hit and an RBI.

Jamestown stats were not reported to The Herald.

— Mercer 19, Conneaut (Ohio) 5 (6 inn.) — At Conneaut, the Mustangs rolled past the Spartans in the Region 1 contest.

Troy Bachman, Chris Oehlbek, and Alex Dupuis led Mercer at the plate. Bachman had two doubles, two singles, and drove in two runs, Oehlbek doubled and drove in three runs, and Dupuis doubled, singled, and had four RBIs.

Also for Mercer, Jake Mattocks ripped two singles and drove in a pair of runs, Julian Lawrence doubled, singled, and had an RBI, Tristan Barr was credited with two RBIs, and Brayden Vernile singled and drove in a run.

Bachman (three innings), Evan Julock (2/3), Barr (2), and Dupuis split time on the mound for the Mustangs. They struck out nine batters, issued two walks, and yielded eight hits.

SOFTBALL

— Jamestown 14, Oil City 4 (5 inn.) — At Jamestown, Liz Kammerdiener and Josie Pfaff blasted two home runs each and Leona Brown hit a homer as the Muskies rolled in the Region 4 clash.

Maddy Marczak doubled and Maddie Wenner homered for Oil City.
