Hickory sophomore Louie Gill, defending PIAA champion, captured the 106-pound championship on Thursday at the 55th annual Powerade Tournament at Canon-McMillan High School in Canonsburg.

The prestigious event featured 66 teams, 15 individual PIAA champs, and 114 PIAA, 23 Ohio, and 27 New Jersey individual state qualifiers.

Gill decisioned Notre Dame-Green Pond's Ayden Smith, 6-4, in the finals to become the first Hickory High wrestler to ever capture a Powerade championship.

Gill decisioned Malvern Prep's Anthony Mutarelli, 4-3, in the semifinals and rolled to an 11-0 major decision victory over Brian Melamud of Bergen Catholic (N.J.) in the quarterfinals.

Hickory's Connor Saylor placed 7th at 138 pounds. He advanced to the quarterfinals, but suffered a 3-0 loss to Alex Almeyda of St. Joseph Regional (N.J.).

Championship

— Greenville 48, Maplewood 44 — Coach Samantha Faler's Lady Trojans (5-2) captured the tourney championship on Thursday night with a win over the Tigers.

The win avenged the Trojans' 69-53 loss at Guys Mills on Dec. 20.

Greenville trailed 17-10 at the end of the opening quarter and 23-20 at halftime. The Trojans outscored Maplewood 14-11 in the 3rd quarter and 14-10 in the 4th frame to secure the tourney crown.

Tourney MVP Grace Cano rifled in 24 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and had 4 steals and 3 blocks to lead the way for Greenville. Sarah Mallek and Reese Schaller contributed 7 points each for the Trojans.

Mallek also dished out 4 assists, Schaller had 10 rebounds, Josie Lewis added 6 rebounds and 4 assists, and Anna Harpst dished out 4 assists. Lewis was named to the All-Tourney Team.

Izzy Eimer led Maplewood with 18 points, Madison Eimer scored 9, and Liliane Moorhead 7.

"I am so unbelievably proud of the girls," said Faler. "This is a huge win for them against a great team. They walked into Maplewood ten days ago after just losing a very close game to (Class) 6A Erie, and they absolutely crushed us.

"Rather than letting it break them, the team worked extremely hard on the holiday break. They committed to playing team basketball, playing with so much defensive heart, and fighting for every single rebound.

"These ladies are extremely tough and I am so happy they got to see their hard work pay off to close out 2021."

Greenville also captured the tourney title at the season-opening 50th Grove City Kiser Classic on Dec. 10-11 with wins over Mercer (52-44) and Grove City (43-32).

Conneaut Area beat Northwestern, 48-46, in Thursday's consolation game at the CASH Tourney.
