ROUNDUP: Jachec is MVC's Pitcher of the Week

Apr. 11—A second complete game this season and his first collegiate shutout added up to Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for Indiana State's Matt Jachec.

Jachec blanked visiting Illinois State 2-0 on Friday at Bob Warn Field. It was his third time in his last four starts that the Sycamore ace has gone at least eight innings and the second POY recognition of his career.

In other college baseball:

—Rose-Hulman 8-3, Hanover 10-1 — At Hanover, Rose-Hulman split its Sunday doubleheader with host Hanover to take two of the three games in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference series.

In the first game, Rose got off to a slow start allowing three first-inning runs. Rose-Hulman pitcher Alec Lewandowski would settle down after the first, allowing one baserunner over the next three innings. The Engineers got a pair of runs back on an RBI single by Conner O'Connell in the fourth and an RBI double by Peter Rogers in the fifth. Hanover tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 4-2.

The Engineers strung together six runs on three hits in the sixth inning, including a RBI single by Jonathan Oliger, a bases loaded RBI walk by Black Deckard, an RBI groundout by Kade Kline, and a two-run double by Colter Couillard-Rodak to take an 8-4 lead. Three Rose errors in the bottom of the sixth would gift the lead back to Hanover as they would score five unearned runs on just three hits and lead 9-8. The Engineers would get a runner on base in each of the last nine innings, but they were unable to capitalize and lost.

In Game 2, a pitchers' duel commenced. Michael Yager went six strong innings of three hits and allowed just one run. He also struck out six batters. In relief, Evan Chung pitched two innings and allowed two hits and two unearned runs. Jonathan Oliger then came in to close it in the ninth with a three-up, three-down inning.

Rose (15-7 overall, 7-1 HCAC) played Tuesday at Webster . Hanover dropped to 8-16 and 2-7.

Prep baseball

—Terre Haute North 4, Edgewood 2 — At Ellettsville, Bryson Carpenter homered and winning pitcher Kendall Gregg had an RBI double for the winning Patriots on Monday.

North hosted Bloomington South on Tuesday in the Patriots' Conference Indiana opener.

—Linton 10, Owen Valley 3 — At Linton, the host Miners won a nonconference game Monday.

—Flora 2, Robinson 0 — At Robinson, Ill., the host Maroons yielded just single runs in the second and fifth innings, but the visiting Wolves' pitchers spun a no-hitter for the win Monday.

Robinson pitchers Shipman, Aldrich, Brown and Nantz combined for nine strikeouts. Flora pitchers Sharp and Atwood struck out 12.

—Lawrenceville 12, Robinson 9 — At Robinson, Ill., the Maroons' 8-6 lead vanished as Lawrenceville scored six times in the top of the fifth inning to sew up a victory Saturday.

Robb had two hits and four RBI for Robinson, while Legg added two hits, two runs scored and three RBI and Liston added two hits. The Maroons' records went to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in the Little Illini Conference.

College softball

—Pomeroys sweep — At Columbus, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods extended its winning streak to five by sweeping a doubleheader over IUPUC on Monday.

SMWC won 7-4 and 6-3 as Gracie Ables and Terre Haute South graduate Jasmine Kinzer picked up wins while Summer Rocha got two saves.

Jaleigh Crawford and Hailey Boardman had inside-the-park homers for the Pomeroys, who will host River States Conference leader IU Southeast on Friday.

—Engineers drop two — Despite a solid offensive effort, Rose fell 8-5 and 10-4 to visiting Manchester in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference home doubleheader Saturday.

In the opener, Rose scored four times in the sixth inning to close within 8-5 but Manchester held on. Phoebe Worstell led the Engineers' offense effort with a 4-for-4 performance. Nicole Lang added her sixth home run of the season and scored twice.

Kennedy Michnewicz provided a boost with a two-run single. Worstell struck out five in a complete-game effort in the pitching circle.

In the nightcap, Rose-Hulman again had a strong sixth inning with three runs but lost. Ashley Pinkham blasted a two-run homer to key the rally.

Worstell continued a strong day with two doubles and two RBIs. Lang also had two hits, including a double, with one run scored. Katelyn Sarvis added an RBI single and one run scored. Pinkham struck out one and Worstell added two strikeouts in the pitching circle.

The Engineers (6-12) returned to action Tuesday with a conference doubleheader at Hanover. Manchester improved to 13-7 and 3-1 in conference play.

Prep softball

—West Vigo 10, Riverton Parke 7 — At West Vigo, the host Vikings came from behind three times to notch a nonconference victory Monday.

Bailey Duke's RBI single gave the visitors an early lead, but Carlea Funk, Grace Rogers and Caprice McCalister had multiple hits for the Vikings. One of Funk's hits was a homer.

West Vigo, 2-4 after this game, opened its Western Indiana Conference schedule at home Tuesday against Cloverdale.

—Clay City 10, Shakamak 0 — At Clay City, Lizzy Sinders pitched a two-hitter as the Eels wrapped up a SouthWestern Indiana Athletic Conference win in six innings Monday.

Abi Shearer led Clay City with a 3-for-4 game that included a double and three runs. Kambryn Rhodes was also 3 for 4; Lexi Thompson 2 for 4 with a double, a homer, two runs and two RBI; Faith Mitchell 2 for 4 with a homer and two runs; Hannah Harris 2 for 4; Sinders and Gracie Oberholtzer both 1 for 3 with a double; and Karlee Smith 1 for 4 with a double and two RBI. The Eels are 4-2, 1-0 in the SWIAC.

Jaylen McCammon and Jama Ewers had hits for Shakamak, now 1-5.

College track

—Engineer women take third — At Wabash, Rose-Hulman's women captured third place Saturday in the Wabash College Invitational.

Evelyn Utley led the team with a school record attempt in the shot put with a mark of 41 feet, 5 inches. Utley also added a second-place finish in the javelin and a fourth-place finish in the discus.

Narindwa Semakula brought home one of the three event wins for the Engineers with a time of 14.67 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles. Semakula's time ranks second all-time in school history and 22nd in NCAA Division III this season. Kylie Rathbun and Jada Hunter-Hays brought home the other two event wins for Rose-Hulman in the javelin at 133 feet, 2 inches and high jump at 4-9.

Kyra Hicks finished second place in the Triple Jump with a distance of 37-3.75 which ranks third all-time in school history.

Rose-Hulman returns to action Saturday at the Indiana D-III championships at DePauw.

—Rose men place fourth — At Wabash, the Engineer men's team home a fourth-place finish Saturday in the Wabash College Invitational.

Tim Youndt led the team with a first-place finish in the triple jump. His mark of 46 feet, 7.25 inches ranks fourth all-time in program history.

Kyle Brownell brought home the other first-place finish for Rose-Hulman in the high jump with a mark of 6 feet, 2.75 inches.

Raymond Bates added the lone other top-three finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.06 seconds.

Rose-Hulman returns to action Saturday at the Indiana D-III championships at DePauw.

Men's golf

—Eight Engineers shoot in 70s — At Normal, Ill., Rose-Hulman golfers recorded eight rounds in the 70s at Illinois Wesleyan on Friday and Saturday.

Thomas Butler led the Engineers with rounds of 76 and 79 to place 71st out of 212 players. Jamison Boykins added a 101st-place finish with two rounds of 79. Other rounds in the 70s were carded Saturday by Matthew Kadnar (76), Alex Bilodeau (79), Ryan Beerheide (79) and Owen King (79).

Rose-Hulman competed in the Emory Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.

—Evansville Memorial 3, Terre Haute South 2 — At Evansville North, the Braves got doubles wins from the teams of Savannah Semmler-Ayden Zinkovich and Jordan Miller-Samhita Shantharam on Monday.

Singles — Chase Boyer (EM) def. Sarah Rowe 6-0, 6-0; Carson Boyer (EM) def. Aja Irish 6-0, 6-1; Olivia Smith (EM) def. Briley Ireland 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

Doubles — Savannah Semmler-Ayden Zinkovich (THS) def. Lauren Conaughty-Hannah Royalty 6-4, 6-3; Jordan Miller-Samhita Shantharam (THS) def. Sara Beckwith-Hannah Kent 7-5, 6-0.

—Sullivan 4, Vincennes Lincoln 1 — At Sullivan, No. 1 singles player Hanna Burkhart of the Golden Arrows suffered her first regular-season loss in two seasons Monday, but Sullivan improved to 2-0.

—South Vermillion wins — At Spencer, the South Vermillion High School boys team shot a 185, topping Owen Valley's 208 in a match played Monday night at Rolling Meadows Golf Club.

The team was boosted by standout performances from junior Tucker Higgins and senior Jase Cox, who had career days. Higgins shot a career-best even-par 36, earning him the medalist title. Cox, on the other hand, carded the first birdie of his career. Higgins narrowly missed out of an under-par round as his birdie putt on the ninth hole burned the edge of the hole.

South Vermillion individual results included Tucker Higgins 36, Josiah McBridge 45, Jase Cox 51, Daven Smith 53 and Thomas Hux 56.

The Wildcats face Fountain Central on April 21.
