Roundup: JG, New Lex claim wrestling titles; Rosecrans boys win in OT

HEATH — Three John Glenn wrestlers earned titles to top the field and head three Muskingum Valley League teams in the top five at the Robin Drumm Invitational on Saturday at Heath High School.

Dominic Bates topped the field at 120, topping Crooksville's Corbyn Browning, 6-2, in the finals, while Jared Smith edged Utica's Breden Hill, 6-4, for the title at 126. Cash Smith, at 175, pinned Utica's Andrew Lewis in the finals at 175.

John Glenn totaled 202 1/2 points, followed by Utica (189), Waterford (185), Coshocton (139) and Crooksville (139). Maysville and Sheridan tied for eighth (122).

John Glenn's Kian Barton was runner-up to River View's Cruz Mobley in the finals at 215 after being pinned in the first period. Owen Edwards was third at 132 and Cohen Bunting fourth at 150 after falling in overtime in the third-place match.

Crooksville also got a runner-up finishes from Jason Hammer at 132 and Hunter Browning at 144, while Christian Browning was third at 126 and James Bookless third at 175.

Darion Smitley was runner-up to Meadowbrook's Logan Greer at 157 and Tristan Angulo (113) and Zane Stanton (190) were third for Coshocton.

Maysville's Logan Wilhite claimed the crown at 144 with a 9-6 decision against Hunter Browning; Anthony Humphrey was third at 138 and Colton Dumolt third at 285 for the Panthers.

Cash Owen was second at 106 and Hunter Zizek second at 190 for Sheridan, while Luke Skinner and Logan Householder were fourth at 120 and 132, respectively.

New Lex tops at Athens: Ethan Burkhart, Sam Longhenry and Zane Pletcher claimed titles at 106 and 285, respectively, to pace New Lex at the John Deno Invitational at Athens High School.

Burkhart's dominance continued, rolling to a 20-5 technical fall in the semifinals against Pomeroy Meigs' Landyn Wandling before pinning Brayden Blevins, of Simon Kenton (Kentucky), in 41 seconds to earn the title. He entered the weekend ranked second in Division II by borofan.net.

Pletcher pinned Luke Bird, of Cabell Midland (West Virginia), in 1:24. All six of his wins were first-period pins.

Longhenry pinned Gnadenhutten Indian Valley's Easton Cook in the finals at 175 and Logan's Gavyn Thomas in the semifinals.

Hunter Rose was second to returning state qualifier Remington Myers, of Indian Valley, after a 6-4 sudden victory loss in the finals. They are ranked eighth and ninth, respectively.

Morgan's Logan Niceswanger was second at 190, falling by a 19-4 tech fall to Nick Giompalo, of Simon Kenton, in the finals. He pinned Clark in the semifinals to advance.

Isaac Ratliff (126), Harrison Ratliff (132) and Hayden Clark (190) were third and Nathan Gottke (144), Nolan Carson (150) and Jesse Wood fourth (215) for New Lex, which totaled 334 1/2 points. Indian Valley was second (282), Athens third (242), Simon Kenton fourth (231) and Magnolia Sandy Valley fifth (207).

Lincicome champ at West Holmes: Senior Drew Lincicome outlasted Medina Buckeye's Dillon Badiu by an 8-7 decision in the finals at 190 pounds, as Philo placed seventh of 17 teams at the West Holmes Invitational.

Lincicome, ranked eighth in Division II by borofan.net entering the weekend, reached the finals with a second-period pin of Navarre Fairless' Logan Berresford, ranked 12th, in the semifinals. He won his previous three matches by pin.

Talan Bailey reached the finals at 150 but fell to North Canton Hoover's Alex Boske, 9-6, in the finals. John Brown was third at 120, Brayden Bernard third at 175 and Monty Boyd fourth at 157 for Philo, which totaled 136 points.

Buckeye earned the team title with 299 1/2 points; Carrollton was second, Medina Highland third (173 1/2), Avon Lake fourth (170) and West Holmes fifth. Sheridan was 14th (43) and Zanesville 15th (27).

Sheridan's Jacob Householder was fourth at 132, falling 1-0 in the third place match to Avon Lake's Jack Velerino, accounting for the only General to reach a placement match. No Blue Devils cracked the top six.

Samson paces West M: Konnor Samson outlasted Mayfield's Braeden Beck, 7-5, in the finals at 150 pounds to pace West Muskingum at the Bulldog Brawl at Uniontown Green

Samson was among four Tornadoes who placed — Steven Crumbaker was third at 157, Andrew Stark third at 175 and Nathan Eltringham sixth at 190.

West placed eighth of 16 teams, almost all from the Northeast District, with 95 points. Canton South won with 226 1/2, edging out Canton GlenOak (223 1/2) and Barberton (204).

Boys Basketball

Rosecrans 53, Sugar Grove Berne Union 51 OT: Weston Hartman blocked a shot with two seconds left in overtime and Brendan Bernath's hot shooting helped propel the Bishops (11-2) to a road comeback in the Mid-State League-Cardinal Division.

Bernath was 4-of-6 on 3s in the fourth quarter and overtime, as the Bishops tied the game with three minutes left in regulation after trailing 31-20 at halftime.

But the Rockets managed only 15 points in the second half, allowing cold-shooting Rosecrans to chip away in the final frame.

After hitting 5 of 23 from beyond the arc in the first half and misfiring on all eight of its long balls in the third, the Bishops hit 5 of 11 in the fourth quarter and overtime. The Bishops were 18-of-61 from the field, which included a whopping 42 attempts from behind the arc.

Bernath's 14 points led Rosecrans; Grady Labishak and Hartman added 13.

Nico Diaz scored all 16 of his points in the first half for Berne Union, while Nae Nemeth chipped in 11. The Rockets were 18-of-46 from the field and committed 15 turnovers to Rosecrans' six.

Bernath and Xander Daniels had seven rebounds and Labishak six assists for the Bishops, who had 14 offensive rebounds.

Sugarcreek Garaway 62, John Glenn 41: The Muskies were held to 12 field goals in a nonleague road loss to the Pirates, who are among the top teams in the Inter-Valley Conference.

Bexlee Woodard had 14 points and Nathan Walker nine for the Muskies, who hit five 3s to a 24-15 lead after a quarter, only to see the Pirates outscore them 47-17 the rest of the game.

Drew Mullet hit five first-half 3s among his 15 points for Garaway; Alex Roden had 13 points and Gabe Amicone 12, respectively. Eight Pirates got in the scorebook.

Sheridan 77, River View 52: A close first half turned into a rout after the visiting Generals piled up 32 points in the third quarter in an MVL-Big School Division win at Luther Stover Gymnasium.

The game was tied at 29 at halftime, but the Generals (9-6, 5-4 MVL-Big) unleashed the fury in a 48-point second half.

Senior guards Reed Coconis and Raine Rodich combined for 17 points in the third on eight 2-pointers, while junior Caden Sheridan and Blake Turnes had seven and five, respectively. Both had 3s.

It sent Sheridan to a 61-40 lead that grew in the fourth, when Evan Anderson had five points and Rodich and Winders four each.

Coconis, Rodich and Sheridan had 17 points and Anderson eight as Sheridan had 33 made bade baskets — only four were 3s.

Owen Emig scored a team-high 21 points for River View (6-9, 2-7), which continues to play without senior guard Brody Border due to a foot injury. Emig had 13 first-half points, including two 3s.

Layton Massie had nine points and Brody Shrimplin eight for River View.

West Muskingum 57, Cols. Horizon Science Academy 51: The host Tornadoes pulled away in the final minute to earn a nonleague win at Gary Ankrum Gymnasium.

The Tornadoes (12-3) maintained a slim lead throughout the second half and took a 40-37 lead into the fourth quarter. They pushed their lead to 53-48 with 28 seconds left.

No details were available.

Girls Basketball

Zanesville 55, Pataskala Watkins Memorial 40: In an impressive turnaround from their previous meeting, the Lady Devils (7-9) had three players reach double figures and led after every quarter in an impressive Licking County League-Buckeye Division road win.

Jersey Draughn hit 4 of 7 3s among her game-high 22 points and Kandrea Sowers was 5-of-6 at the line in a 13-point effort for Zanesville, which took a 37-26 lead into the fourth and were never again threatened.

Jada Seyfried tossed in a trio of 3-pointers among her 12 points, including two in the first quarter to help spot Zanesville a 14-10 lead. Draughn also had two 3s in that span, then hit another in the second as ZHS pushes its lead to 23-15.

Zanesville finished 7-of-13 on 3s and 16-of-22 from the free-throw line, both well above its season averages.

Ella Perry had 13 points and Kalleigh Rennie eight for Watkins, which won the first meeting by 25 points at Winland Gym.

Tri-Valley 62, Morgan 19: Karlee Rose tossed in a game-high 17 points with four 3s for the host Scotties (13-3, 10-1 MVL-Big), who jumped ahead 19-4 in the first quarter and never looked back in an MVL crossover in in Dresden.

Mackenzie Harvey added 15 points and Lexi Howe 12 with a pair of 3s for Tri-Valley, which had seven players score and forced a running clock after taking a 51-16 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Scotties were without Kylan Brock and Jacie Rollison, who sat with injuries.

Odessa Smith had seven points for Morgan, which scored only 16 points through three quarters.

Sheridan 72, Coshocton 13: The Generals surrendered only five first-half points in a crossover rout against the visiting Redskins at Glen Hursey Gymnasium.

Jamisyn Stinson fired in seven 3s among her game-high 27 points and Nora Saffell had 17 of her 19 points in the first half for Sheridan (14-2, 9-1 MVL-Big). They combined for 16-of-21 shooting — neither played past the third quarter.

Ava Heller added 14 counters with two 3s as Sheridan led 67-10 after three quarters and held Savannah Bartlett, one of the top scorers in the MVL, to just two points.

Philo 41, Meadowbrook 39: The visiting Colts (11-5, 8-4 MVL-Small) had a chance to force overtime in their MVL crossover win at The Power Plant, but they came up empty on a shot at the buzzer as the Electrics prevailed.

Philo (7-9, 5-7 MVL-Big) took a 28-24 lead into the final quarter, but Karly Launder helped bring the Colts back with eight of her team-high 13 points. Kenli Norman chipped in 11 and Maddie May seven. Meadowbrook was just 6-of-12 on free throws.

Olivia Dement knocked down four 3s — three in the first half — and shared for the team high in points with 12 points. Caitlyn Rose had six points in each half as part of her 12, while Aleigha Busse hit all three of her free throws in a 10-point showing.

Philo overcame 22 turnovers by collecting 16 steals — Busse had six. Rose added three blocked shots and Olivia Winland and Bri Wolfe five rebounds.

Philo took the reserve game, 10-6.

New Lexington 45, River View 25: Aubri Spicer scored 13 of her 14 points in the first three quarters for the Panthers (13-4, 10-1 MVL-Small), whose crossover win kept them two games up of West Muskingum in the MVL-Small School Division.

Chloe Dick hit two 3s among her 13 points and Trinity Cook chipped in six markers for New Lex.

Lily Yoder and Prestyn Patterson had seven points for River View (5-11, 3-9), which scored nine points in the first half and trailed 37-17 entering the fourth.

John Glenn 56, Crooksville 27: McKinzi Linscott and Mya Oliver scored 15 and 13 points, respectively, as the Muskies rolled to an MVL crossover win against the visiting Ceramics.

Linscott and Oliver scored all of their points in the first three quarters. They combined for 5-of-5 shooting at the line, helping John Glenn (11-5, 6-4 MVL-Big) jump ahead 19-9 after a quarter and 33-15 at halftime.

Madeline Winland and Aleea Musselman added six points for the Muskies.

Lexi Van Meter sank two 3s in a 14-point showing for Crooksville (2-15, 1-11 MVL-Small).

John Glenn took the reserve game, 47-16, behind 14 points from Hannah Chrisman and 10 from Aubrey Larrick.

West M 60, Maysville 22: The Tornadoes rolled to an MVL crossover win on the road to remain two games back of New Lex in the Small School Division standings.

Jayden Thornton scored 20 points, Taylor Spung added eight and Zoie Settles and Laney Johnson had seven points apiece for West.

Ashtyn Merlo had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Panthers.

Swimming

Tri-Valley hosts annual quad: Tri-Valley's girls won dual matches against Watkins Memorial (53-41), Reynoldsburg (66-28) and Lakewood (68-23) in a quadrangular on Senior Day at the Muskingum Family Y.

Dani Stewart earned wins in the 200 freestyle (2:23.8), Jesi Fuhriman in the 200 intermediate medley (2:33.4) and 100 breaststroke, Mia Fuhriman in the 100 freestyle (1:01.8) and Emma Lewis the 50 freestyle (:29.84) and 500 freestyle (6:29.3) for Tri-Valley. Sarah Jacoby claimed conquests in the 100 butterfly (1:13.0) and Abri Mallett in the 100 backstroke.

Tri-Valley also claimed wins in the 200 medley relay (2:07.8), 200 freestyle relay (1:51.8) and 400 relay (4:17.0).

Tri-Valley's boys won its dual meet with Lakewood (61-13) and dropped decisions to Watkins (46-41) and Reynoldsburg (51-40).

Gabe Lentz claimed wins in the 200 freestyle (2:15.1), A.J. Lawler the 100 butterfly (:58.9) and 100 breaststroke (1:09.5) and Caden Blake in the 100 backstroke (1:25.6). Sam Wegner was victorious in the 500 freestyle (6:24.5) and Austin Masters the 50 freestyle.

Tri-Valley also claimed wins in the 400 relay (4:53.5), 200 medley relay (2:05.4) and 200 relay (1:48.9).
