Roundup: Johnstown softball beats Granville to begin LCL play

Addie Triplett and Dakota Staffan had two doubles apiece, totaling five hits, two runs scored and three RBIs, powering the Johnstown softball team to a 5-1 victory against visiting Granville to begin Licking County League play.

Macy Walters, Laney Zak and Aubrey Del Cecato each added a single and a run scored for the Johnnies (2-0, 1-0). Walters struck out two and allowed no earned runs in a three-hitter.

Sophia Patena had a hit and a run scored and Avary King an RBI for the Blue Aces (1-1, 0-1). Ally Ernsberger struck out six and allowed three earned runs.

Heights wins at Darby

Syd Stout hit two home runs, finishing with three hits and four RBIs, rallying Licking Heights to a 16-7 victory at Hilliard Darby.

Kaylyn Hopf and Alissa West also each homered, combining for six hits and five RBIs, and Ava VonBargen and Avery Fuller added two hits, two runs scored and an RBI apiece and Savanna Christ a triple and three runs scored for the Hornets (2-0), who trailed 7-4. Chesney McPeak threw two scoreless innings in relief.

Valley beats Utica

Taylor Penick had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs for Licking Valley, which used a seven-run third inning to beat visiting Utica 9-6.

Addison Justice, Sylvie Devore, Liz Korns and Rylie Dennis also each doubled and had either a run scored or an RBI, and Haylee Smalls added two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Rylee Pitt struck out seven and allowed no earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Lexi Wiegand had two hits, including a double, a run scored and two RBIs, Emily Meyers a hit and three runs scored and Karleigh Lees a double, a run scored and an RBI for Utica (1-2). Lees struck out two and allowed just an unearned run in 3 1/3 innings of relief.

Newark cruises

Meah Morris was 4 for 4 with three runs scored and four RBIs for Newark in a 20-0 victory against visiting Zanesville.

Jaylen Jackson homered as she and Brooke Nelson each had two extra-base hits with Nelson and Dez Osler driving in three runs apiece, and Paige Simons and Mallory Back had three hits, two runs scored and an RBI apiece for the Wildcats (3-2). Jackson and Marleigh Crawford each struck out five in a combined two-hitter.

Watkins wins

Maleya Thompson's grand slam put away Watkins Memorial's 8-0 victory against New Berlin (Wisconsin) at Disney World.

Taylor Gerhardt and Ava McKee added two hits apiece, combining for three runs scored and an RBI, and Kylie Trouten had a two-run double for the Warriors (4-0). Carsyn Cassady struck out 11 in five no-hit innings, and Kendal Tellings struck out three in two innings of relief.

Lakewood ties

Rachel Crist homered as a part of a 3-for-5 day for Lakewood in a 3-3 tie after 10 innings at Grove City.

Dani Stewart added a hit and a run scored, Abby Colley a hit and two RBIs and Lauren Griffith two hits for the Lancers (2-1-1). Becca Streets struck out five.

Northridge falls

Maddie Reese had three hits and two RBIs for Northridge in a 9-4 loss at Danville.

Emily Hanes and Lexi Thompson added a hit and an RBI apiece and Kenzie Hannahs a double and a run scored for the Vikings (1-1).

BASEBALL

Newark rolls at home

Moses Crane tripled and Jalen White doubled, each recording two hits, a run scored and two RBIs for Newark in a 12-1 victory against visiting Worthington Kilbourne.

Jayce Dansby and Kyle Driskel each had a double, combining for five runs scored and two RBIs, and Seth Fish added a hit, two runs scored and two RBIs for the Wildcats (2-0-1). Cayden Vermilion struck out two in five four-hit innings.

Utica wins on road

Tyler Collura and Jordan Hartman each singled and doubled with a run scored, leading Utica to a 4-2 victory at Loudonville.

Gavin Chinn added a hit, a run scored and an RBI and Roman Gamble a hit and a run scored for Utica (2-1). Connor Garee, the first of five pitchers, threw two hitless innings, and Aidyn Burgess struck out two, recording the final four outs.

Granville beats Reynoldsburg

Jacob Smith had two hits, including a double, and three runs scored out of the leadoff spot, sparking Granville in a 12-6 victory at Reynoldsburg.

Ezra Kurek totaled a hit, two runs scored and three RBIs, Nolan Tracy a hit, two runs scored and an RBI and Gavin Vradenburg a hit and two RBIs for the Blue Aces (2-1). Aaron Gutridge struck out five and allowed no earned runs in two innings, and Tracy and Owen Hoenie combined for three scoreless innings to close it out.

NC nipped late

Four Newark Catholic errors helped DeSales slip past the visiting Green Wave 4-3 in eight innings.

Miller Hutchison, Anthony Robertson and Nate Ferrell combined for 10 strikeouts and allowed just one earned run. Grant Moore tripled for the Green Wave (2-1).

Lakewood falls at Lancaster

Tyler Bebout struck out four and allowed one earned run in 3⅔ innings for Lakewood in a 5-0 loss at Lancaster.

Mason Sprankle struck out three and allowed no earned runs in 2⅓ innings of relief. Cayden MacDonald doubled for the Lancers (1-2).

Northridge falls at Highland

Alex Wright doubled and singled, scored a run and drove in two for Northridge in a 15-4 loss at Highland.

Layne Mercer and Noah Zigo added a hit and a run scored apiece and James Kalas a hit and two RBIs for the Vikings (0-2).

Liberty drops road game

Evan Dupler and Joel Mollohan had a hit and an RBI apiece for Liberty Christian in an 11-3 loss at Bishop Ready.

Luke Mollohan added a hit and a run scored for the Eagles (1-2). Jack Chabot threw two hitless innings of relief.

Watkins edged twice

Five errors cost Watkins Memorial in a 5-4 loss to Smyrna (Tennessee).

Ethan Williams had two hits, including a double, a run scored and an RBI, Cole Massie a hit, two runs scored and an RBI, Sam Johnson doubled and scored and Michael Olson had a hit and an RBI. Braiden Bates struck out five and allowed one earned run in five innings.

The Warriors (1-2) also lost 5-1 to Lake Forest (Tennessee) with Trace Hartman recording two hits and an RBI.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Heights sweeps

Blake Kibler's 10 kills led a balanced attack Wednesday in Licking Heights' victory, 25-17, 25-19, 25-17, at Pickerington Central.

Dominic Limberopoulos added seven kills and Ousman Barry and Logan Christ six kills apiece. Christ and Cleveland Brown also had five aces apiece, and Christ combined with Jaden Peach for 28 assists for the Hornets (5-2).
