Knife-wielding incident leads to arrest

Police in Ventura arrested a 38-year-old man who had allegedly been swinging a knife in the parking lot of a Vons Tuesday afternoon, at one point threatening several juveniles.

Ventura Police Department officers responded around 3:20 p.m. to the Vons shopping center in the 6000 block of Telegraph Road, at the corner with Victoria Avenue.

The weapon was a kitchen knife with a blade about 4 inches long, said Cmdr. Edward Caliento.

The suspect approached several juveniles and allegedly slashed at them, hitting one female victim in the back. She was not injured, police said.

The man, described as vagrant, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. Caliento said the department knows the individual, who has been arrested and convicted numerous times in the past.

A man was arrested Monday on suspicion of multiple felony offenses after allegedly setting a fire in a city public works truck while two employees were in it, the Port Hueneme Police Department reported.

The incident started unfolding around 4 p.m. when police were notified that an individual was disturbing adults and children at Bubbling Springs Park, near baseball fields in the 1100 block of Park Avenue. The two maintenance workers had just finished a plumbing job at a park restroom when the man jumped in the truck bed and set it on fire, police said.

The employees used an extinguisher to stop the fire and the man ran a short distance on Bard Road and past city limits into Oxnard, where police arrested him.

The suspect was identified as a 31-year-old man from Oxnard with numerous prior arrests. The man was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, arson and felony vandalism, police said.

Stalking arrest in case involving explosive device

A man who allegedly traveled from Arizona to Thousand Oaks and tossed a large firework on his ex-girlfriend's street last month was arrested Tuesday.

On Jan. 28, Ventura County Sheriff's deputies had responded to the 100 block of South Fallbrook Avenue in Thousand Oaks for a reported explosion. Residents told deputies a vehicle had stopped in the street and the driver had dropped an explosive device.

Sheriff's Capt. Steve Michalec said the device was a possible M-80, a powerful firecracker, and that the suspect had reportedly tossed the device into a gutter. One resident told officials it sounded like a stick of dynamite.

A woman, 50, who lived on the street was reportedly being stalked by her ex-boyfriend and suspected he may have been responsible. The man, 51, lives in Arizona.

Detectives found evidence the ex-boyfriend was the perpetrator and had traveled from Arizona to carry out the act, then returned to Arizona after detonating the device, sheriff's officials said. They got a $100,00 arrest warrant with extradition terms and sought help finding the suspect from sheriff's authorities in Pinal County, Arizona.

On Tuesday, the man was taken into custody on the warrant by Pinal County authorities.
