Roundup: Ledford hires Doby to coach football

Jun. 30—WALLBURG — Chris Doby will be Ledford's next football coach, the school announced Tuesday evening.

Doby, who also coached the girls basketball team until stepping down recently, has been the defensive coordinator under Chris Adams.

Adams stepped down last week after 11 years as head coach — the longest tenure in school history.

The Panthers, who set a school record with 13 wins, won the conference and reached the regional in 2018, went 4-3 this year in an abbreviated season.

POST 87 TOPS GREENSBORO

THOMASVILLE — High Point Post 87 scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to beat Greensboro 4-0 in American Legion baseball Monday night at Finch Field.

Eli Crump (High Point Christian) pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out 11 while allowing one hit and three walks.

Walker Bethune had two hits and an RBI to lead the HiToms (6-2), who totaled five hits for the game. Julian Abreu, Gavin Sentell and Avery Adams each drove in a run.

Post 87, following a home game Tuesday against Mount Airy and a day off Wednesday, will play again Thursday at home against Stokes County.

TENNIS NCHSAA 2A CHAMPIONSHIP

CARY — Jessica Fuchs of Oak Grove lost in the singles final of the NCHSAA 2A championships Saturday at Cary Tennis Park.

Fuchs defeated Alexis Allison of Newton-Conover 6-0, 6-3 in the semifinals. In the final against Alexis Woglemuth of Fred T. Foard, Fuchs lost the first set 6-1, won the second 6-1 and lost the third 6-4.

Fuchs also reached the championship match in 2018.

Chloe Bethea and Marlie Stephenson of Oak Grove lost in the doubles semifinals, falling to sisters McCollough Perry and Eliza Perry of Hendersonville, 6-1, 6-0.

NCHSAA 1A CHAMPIONSHIP

CARY — Bishop McGuinness' Lourdes Lopez reached the semifinals of the NCHSAA 1A girls tennis championship this weekend at the Cary Tennis Park.

Lopez defeated Raleigh Charter's Keerthi Avula 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals of the singles bracket Friday. She then lost 6-1, 6-0 against Gray Stone's Emma Grace Bost in the semifinals.

Pine Lake Prep's Andersen Schubert beat Bost 6-7 (7-3), 7-5, 6-0 in the championship Saturday. Pine Lake Prep, led by MVP Schubert, took the team title as well.

COLLEGIATE SUMMER BASEBALL HITOMS

THOMASVILLE — Ty Wilsmeyer hit a three-run walk-off home run in the 10th and The HiToms edged the Asheboro Copperheads 10-9 Sunday at Finch Field.

High Point-Thoamsville trailed 6-0 before scoring six in the eighth on Hogan Windish's three-run homer, Tom Caufield's two-run triple and Caufield racing home on a wild pitch.

The Copperheads scored three in the top of the 10th. The HiToms took advantage of an Asheboro error to score one run and after two outs, Wilsmeyer hit his game-winning shot.

On Saturday, the HiToms lost 8-6 and 4-1 in two seven-inning games at Forest City.

Windish went 5 for 7 with a home run and double. His three-run homer put High Point-Thomasville in front 4-2 in the first game before Forest City scored six in the fifth.

The HiToms added two runs late on Chet Sikes' groundout and C.J. Johnson's double.

Johnson smacked a solo homer for the HiToms' only run in the second game.

The HiToms travel to Asheboro today.

U.S. TRACK AND FIELD TRIALS

EUGENE, Ore. — Tamara Clark, who starred at High Point Central, just missed Saturday night in her bid to secure a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.

With the top three finishers in the women's 200 meters earning a trip to Tokyo next month, Clark finished fourth, just .03 seconds behind third-place Anavia Battle of Ohio State. Battle pulled ahead in the closing meters after she and Clark ran stride-for-stride coming down the stretch.

Gabby Thomas, a professional, handily won in 21.61 seconds, which is the best time in the world this year and third all-time to two runs by Florence Griffith-Joyner, who set the record of 21.34 set in the 1988 Olympics.

Jenna Prandini, another professional, was second at 21.89 seconds.

ACC SPORTS MEN'S BASKETBALL

GREENSBORO — Pairings for this year's ACC/Big Ten Challenge in men's basketball were announced Monday.

Iowa will visit Virginia and Notre Dame will travel to Illinois on the opening day Nov. 29.

The schedule on Tuesday, Nov. 30 includes Clemson at Rutgers, Duke at Ohio State, Florida State at Purdue, Minnesota at Pitt, Indiana at Syracuse and Northwestern at Wake Forest.

The challenge closes on Wednesday, Dec. 1 with Wisconsin at Georgia Tech, Louisville at Michigan State, Miami at Penn State, Michigan at North Carolina, Nebraska at NC. State and Virginia Tech at Maryland.

Boston College is the ACC team left out this year.

All games are to be televised on the ESPN family of networks. Game times and network assignments are to be announced.

HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY SPORTS TRACK AND FIELD

CHARLOTTE — High Point University grad student Zoe Geis has been selected the Big South Women's Track Athlete of the Year while HPU freshmen pole vaulter Sydney Horn and

Chirs Niekirk swept the Women's and Men's Field Athlete of the Year honors determined by the league's coaches at their annual June meeting, the conference announced Monday.

Geis was the Most Valuable Athlete of the 2021 Big South Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships as she accumulated 28 points with victories in the 10,000m and the 3,000m Steeplechase, in addition to a runner-up finish in the 5,000m.

Horn claimed All-America honors in the pole vault in both the indoor and outdoor season. She finished third in the pole vault at the indoor National Meet with a Big South-record height of 4.41m. Horn's freshman season culminated with a sixth-place finish in the outdoor pole vault in Eugene with a clearance of 4.30m — becoming HPU's first Outdoor Track & Field All-American.

Van Niekerk was the Big South Men's Outdoor Track & Field Freshman of the Year for having the most accumulated points by a freshman with 26 at the conclusion of this year's conference championship meet. He won the shot put with a Big South championship meet record throw of 18.67m (61-03.00) — which tied the overall conference record and established a Vert Stadium mark. Van Niekerk also claimed the discus (55.42m) and finished third in the javelin with a personal-best mark of 59.93m.

MEN'S SOCCER

HIGH POINT — High Point University men's soccer head coach Zach Haines announced the 2021 recruiting class for the Panthers on Monday.

The class contains seven players — two who were among the Top-Drawer Soccer class of 2021 Top 200 rankings, a Sun-Belt Conference standout grad transfer, a High School All-American, two MLS NEXT standouts, and an ECNL Captain and regional champion.

They include Maryland United midfielder Aidan Abril (the brother of Panther Alex Abril), Georgia Southern midfielder/forward grand transfer Aldair Cortes, NC Fusion midfielder David Greene (who joined the team in January), Charlotte Soccer Academy defender/midfielder Tanner Rothenberger, Maryland United midfielder Jackson Ruckman and IMG Academy forward Jackson Rula of Briningham, Alabama.

WINSTON-SALEM — Christian Joyce of Trinity bumped his way past Jeremy Warren in the 17th lap and won a 20-lap Street Stock race Saturday night at Bowman Gray Stadium. Corey Rose of Trinity took 15th.

Spencer Martin of Wallburg held off Amber Lynn of Kernersville in a series of overtime restarts and won a 116-lap Sportsman main event that went past its scheduled 100 laps because of rules that prevent a finish under the caution flag.

Martin took the lead on lap 52 and won for the first time since a Street Stock victory in 2018.

Mitch Gales of Thomasville finished 11th.

Burt Myers and John Holelman won 25-lap Modified races. Lee Jeffreys of Wallburg was fourth and sixth, respectively, while Bussy Beavers of Trinity was 21st and 17th.

Luke Smith and Kyler Staley were winners in 15-lap Stadium Stock races.

The track is idle this Saturday in its usual break for the July 4 holiday.
