Roundup: Licking Heights wrestling duo notches third-place finishes on home mats

Richard Storts and Michael Landry each rebounded from semifinal losses Saturday to earn third-place finishes for the Licking Heights wrestling team during its Licking Heights Invitational.

Storts finished 3-1 with three pins at 113 pounds. Landry matched his 3-1 with three pins at 132.

Boyd, Niemann win titles

Licking Valley's Devin Boyd and Watkins Memorial's Josh Niemann each climbed to the top of the podium during the Hammer & Anvil Invitational at Western Brown.

Boyd pinned four opponents at 144 pounds before edging Campbell County's Orien Stacey 8-7 in the final.

Niemann finished 4-0 with three pins at 120. He upset top-seeded Jeremiah Wilbers of Campbell County 11-10 in the semifinals.

Valley's Cooper Hornfeck (106) and Conner Roback (138) each took runner-up for the third-place Panthers. A.J. Kimble (113), Joe Perkins (126) and Alijah Stevens (132) each placed third.

Lakewood's Josh Taylor (157) also placed third.

Untied, Gates finish on top

Calvin Untied and Kameron Gates each won titles to lead Newark during Fredericktown's Freddie Invitational.

Untied pinned his first four opponents at 144 pounds before shutting out New Philadelphia's Ezekiel Williams 7-0 in the final.

Gates finished 5-0 with one pin. He beat New Philadelphia's Sione Williams 16-8 in the final.

Andre Mercier (138) added a runner-up finish for the Wildcats.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Lakewood edges NC

Camryn Martindale scored seven points in the critical fourth quarter, allowing first-place Lakewood to clinch a 46-40 victory against visiting Newark Catholic in Licking County League-Cardinal Division play.

Grace Sturgell led the Lancers (6-4, 4-2) with 12 points. Martindale and Addison Pound followed with nine points apiece.

Chloe Chard-Peloquin led NC (7-4, 5-4) with 18 points. Kylie Gibson added eight points.

Northridge outlasts Utica

Reese Callan's 16 points led a balanced attack for Northridge, which beat visiting Utica 61-56 in overtime in LCL-Cardinal play.

Hannah Aamodt followed with 13 points for the Vikings (2-11, 1-8), who tied the game with 3.4 seconds left in regulation on freshman Maddie Knerr's two free throws. Darla Dorman added 11 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks and Kenzie Hannahs 10 points.

Abby Dickson led Utica (2-10, 1-8) with 20 points. Skylar Parker added 13 points.

Granville remains perfect

Cate Schieber hit a trio of first-quarter 3-pointers, shooting Granville out to a 16-2 lead, and the Blue Aces cruised from there to a 58-34 victory against Sidney in the Classic in the City at Pickerington Central.

Schieber hit five 3s and totaled 17 points. Aliyah Moore, who hit three 3s, and Ella Wigal added 11 points apiece for Granville (14-0).

Watkins wins

Cameryn Wheeler scored five fourth-quarter points to help seal Watkins Memorial's 44-38 victory against Jonathan Alder in the Battle in the 614 at Ohio Dominican.

Wheeler totaled 12 points, matching Alyssa Haynes' 12. Olivia Perry added eight points for the Warriors (10-3).

GCA picks up ninth win

Granville Christian put three players in double figures in a 62-44 victory against visiting Genoa Christian.

Darynne Zellar totaled 19 points. Hannah Hubbard and Brianna Hubbard added 16 points apiece for the Lions (9-4).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Utica beats GCA

Utica put nine players in the scoring column, beating visiting Granville Christian 91-58.

Seth Cooper piled up 26 points for Utica (9-3). Trenton Collins and Zach Heckman added 15 points apiece, Roman Gamble 12 and Beau Dunlap nine with Heckman, Gamble and Dunlap combining for 10 of the team's school-record 16 3-pointers.

Joe Benvie led the Lions (7-5) with 24 points. Jayden Leija added 10 points and Andrew Benvie and Eli Cooper eight apiece.

Granville falls

Granville was outscored 32-17 in the second half, falling 61-41 to Dover in North Canton.

Dante Varrasso and Max Rosinski led the Blue Aces (6-5) with 13 points apiece. Dylan Niedermeyer added nine points.

SWIMMING

Hardin takes 10th

Granville's Hannah Hardin swam a time of 53.45 to place 10th in the 100 freestyle during the Northeast Classic in Canton. The event combines all divisions and includes many of the top swimmers in the state.

Hardin also placed 11th in the 50 free (24.61).

In the boys meet, Granville's Graham Mayberry had a pair of 11th-place finishes in the 100 backstroke (54.95) and 200 free (1:46.93).

Lakewood's Austin Masters placed 13th in the 100 free (49.41) and 14th in the 50 free (22.37).

BOWLING

Newark girls sets records

The Newark girls reset a pair of school records, rolling a 2,525 series and 3,497 total during the Central District Preview at the Palace.

Jade Gabor hit 200 in all three games, rolling a high game of 231 and series of 632 to lead the Wildcats. Caitlyn Parker also rolled a 200 game, and Makayla Adams (194-532) and Gianna Hayes (156-442) recorded the next-best series.

TRACK

Fillmore wins long jump

Licking Heights' D.J. Fillmore recorded a best of 21-feet-2.5 to win the long jump during the Ohio State HS #1 Qualifier.

He also placed third in the 60 (7.08).
