Roundup: Licking Valley wrestling takes team title at Canal Winchester

The Licking Valley wrestling team powered by four champions Saturday piled up 242 points to win Canal Winchester's Cameron Cross Invitational.

Mason Hornfeck (120), Luke Conaway (150), Bryce Justice (190) and Theo Walsh (215) were champions for the Panthers, who finished just two points ahead of runner-up Canton South.

Hornfeck finished 5-0 with three pins, beating Central Crossing's Caleb Eads 15-7 in the final, and Conaway finished 5-0 with four pins, beating Westland's David Dell 3-1 in the final. Justice went 5-0 with four pins, beating Canton South's Grant Treacher 2-1 in the final, and Walsh pinned all five of his opponents, including Canton South's DeAngelo Spear in the final.

Newark Catholic's Brian Luft (132) and Brendan Sheehan (175) also were champions. Luft was 4-0 with three pins, beating Central Crossing's Josh Ramirez 8-3 in the final, and Sheehan was 5-0 with three pins, beating Central Crossing's Jayden Vazquez 7-0 in the final.

Valley's Noah Curry (113) and NC's Nico Richards (138) each were runner-up.

Granville splits

Granville beat Tippecanoe 55-24 before falling 73-6 to host top-seeded Graham Local during the Division II district duals.

Corbin Bell (144), Ethan Dickey-Viveralli (150), Keegan Finley (157) and Carson Carr (165) each won by pin against Tippecanoe, and Owen Simms (120) 8-1 and Andy Sanchez (126) 24-10 each won by decision for the Blue Aces. Ian Rutherford (Hwt.) won by pin against Graham.

Smith, Daugherty lead Newark

Jibreel Smith (126) and James Daugherty (165) each won both of his matches, leading Newark in losses 63-9 to top-seeded Olentangy Liberty and 53-24 to host Teays Valley during the Division I district duals.

Jibreel Smith won by pin and 3-0 decision, and James Daugherty won by 9-3 decision and pin. Kaleb Clark (144) and Eli Justice (150) 2-1 also won contested matches against the Vikings.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Newark wins on road

Brie Gingras racked up 20 points in Newark's 45-33 victory at Upper Arlington.

Ally Carr added 12 points on four 3-pointers, Syncere Royster eight points and four assists and Sophie Bidwell eight rebounds for the Wildcats (11-10), who handed the Golden Bears just their fifth loss of the season.

Lakewood nips Utica

Becca Streets’ late 3-pointer forced overtime, where Lakewood earned a 52-48 victory against visiting Utica in Licking County League-Cardinal Division play.

Charlee Palmer led the balanced attack with 12 points for the Lancers (6-14, 3-12). Grace Sturgell and Rachel Crist added 11 apiece, Jaylie Maas nine and Streets seven.

Abby Dickson led Utica (8-13, 4-11) with 19 points. Skylar Parker added 13 and Abby Paxton eight.

Moore sets mark

Aliyah Moore buried six 3-pointers, totaling 18 points and sending Granville to a 58-29 victory at Licking Valley as the Blue Aces (19-1, 14-0) completed a perfect run through LCL-Buckeye play.

Moore broke the program’s single-season record for 3s now sitting at 60. Ava Gossman added 10 points, Harper Annarino nine, Haley Strasser eight and Taylor Warehime seven.

Cassie Orr led the Panthers (4-16, 3-11) with seven points. Avery Williams, Peyton Robey and Makala Bennett each added six.

Johnstown beats Northridge

Johnstown held visiting Northridge to 14 points through three quarters, earning a 43-27 victory in LCL-Cardinal play.

Abigail Adkins totaled 14 points and Lauren Baughman 13 to lead the Johnnies (13-7, 11-4). Kylie Sharp added eight points, seven rebounds and three steals and Michaela Perfors four assists.

Ava Travis led the Vikings (6-14, 4-11) with 12 points. Naia Moore added six.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Heath drops road game

Jaxon Duston's 11 points led Heath in a 59-42 loss at DeSales.

Preston DeVito added 10 points, Jordan Kaminsky nine and Ben Mason seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks for the Bulldogs (11-7).

SWIMMING

Hatfield medals twice

Maryn Hatfield placed third in both the 50 free (26.53) and 100 free (59.15), leading Newark during the Southeastern Ohio Swim League championships at Kenyon.

In the boys meet, Leyton Ricketts placed fifth in the both the 200 individual medley (2:33.09) and 100 backstroke (1:06.92), and Jeremy Schweiger placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.09).
