Roundup: Mercer softball beats Grove City; Red-hot Raiders roll past Hounds

May 18—SOFTBALL

— Mercer 11, Grove City 4 — At Brandy Springs Park in Mercer, Pressley Washil threw a complete-game seven-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks as the Region 1 Mustangs (7-8) defeated Region 4 Grove City (9-8).

Logan Jones went the distance on the mound for the Eagles. She fanned four batters, issued two walks, and gave up 10 hits.

Washil doubled and singled for Mercer while Kailyn Adams and Lexie Walker both doubled.

Rylie Eaton blasted a pair of two-run homers to lead Grove City at the plate and Jones had two singles.

— Reynolds 11, Wilmington 0 (5 inn.) — At Transfer, Mackenzie Herman threw a one-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and three walks as the red-hot Raiders (11-1, 15-2) rolled to the Region 1 win.

Reynolds avenged a tough 5-4 loss at Wilmington on April 22.

Andrea Hillyer blasted a home run, two singles, and drove in three runs to lead Reynolds at the plate. Marissa Hillyer homered and drove in a pair of runs.

Also for the Raiders, Halyn Cawthorne doubled, singled, and drove in a run, Rylee Gearhart and Phoenix Collins both doubled and singled, Herman contributed a pair of singles and two RBIs, and Chloe McLaughlin singled and drove in a run.

Jadyn Flick (3 2/3 innings) and Ava Williamson pitched for Wilmington (9-4, 10-6). Each had one strikeout.

— Sharpsville 9, West Middlesex 0 — At Milliken Avenue Park in Sharpsville, Devils' ace Breanna Hanley fired a three-hit shutout with 17 strikeouts and only one walk in the Region 1 win.

Paige Yarian had two singles and drove in three runs for the Devils (12-1, 12-2), Lily Palko doubled, singled, and drove in a run, Alli Davis ripped two singles and had an RBI, Hanley contributed two singles, Avery McFeaters collected three singles, and Izzie Candiotti and Bella Ritenour both singled and drove in a run.

Kaylee Long went the distance for West Middlesex (7-5, 7-6). She had one strikeout, one walk, and yielded 14 hits.

Taylor Tomko led the Reds at the plate with a double and a single.

— Franklin 7, Hickory 5 — At Hermitage, the Knights improved to a perfect 16-0 in Region 4 and 17-1 overall with the win over the Hornets.

The game was tied 5-all after five innings, but Franklin plated a run in the sixth and one in the seventh to earn the victory.

Trinity Edge went the distance in the circle for Franklin. She struck out seven batters, walked six, and gave up six hits.

Lydia Hallas also went the distance for Hickory. She collected five strikeouts, only issued one walk, and gave up seven hits.

Edge hit a solo home run for the Knights, Brandy Atwell homered and singled, Sydni Hoobler tripled and drove in a run, and Rilee Hanna doubled.

For Hickory, Layla McClung doubled, singled, and drove in a pair of runs, Hallie Miller doubled and had an RBI, and Malaiah Burns had three stolen bases.

— Sharon 11, Slippery Rock 6 — At Wengler Field in Sharon, coach Dave Bodien's Tigers (7-8, 9-9) trailed 6-4 before scoring five runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to earn the Region 4 win.

Lexi Berkson tied the game 6-all in the fifth with a bases-loaded, two-run single up the middle. The Tigers were able to load the bases again and Miranda Metro ripped a two-out, three-run double. Dalaini Bayer had a two-run single in the sixth.

Metro went the distance for Sharon. She had five strikeouts, only issued one walk, and gave up two earned runs on eight hits. At the plate she had the double and three RBIs.

Also for the Tigers, Berkson doubled, singled, and drove in two runs, Bayer collected three singles and three RBIs, Claire Bodien and Ella Connelly both singled twice, and Kurtasia Chester singled and drove in a pair of runs.

Ciani D'Antoni led Slippery Rock (3-12, 3-13). She went the distance with seven strikeouts, two walks, and gave up nine hits. At the dish, she homered, doubled, and drove in four runs.

Also for the Rockets, Brooke Balint ripped two singles and drove in a run and Kinzie Miller and Emma Green both doubled and singled.

— Kennedy Catholic 15, Farrell 4 (5 inn.) — At Hermitage, Monique Vincent earned the win and scored three times to lead KC (2-11, 2-12) to its second win of the season in a Region 1 clash.

Vincent went the distance in the circle. She struck out five batters and only gave up one hit.

Also for Kennedy, Brooke Kirkpatrick singled and scored three runs, Lydia Grove touched home three times, and Clarissa Ealy doubled and scored twice.

Maria Harrison suffered the loss for Farrell (0-14, 0-14). Jaylie Green led the Steelers at the plate with a triple.

— Jamestown 4, Corry 1 — At Jamestown, the defending District 10 Class 3A champion Muskies improved to 11-4 in Region 4 and 12-5 overall with the win over the Beavers (7-8, 7-9).

Miranda Biles fired a complete-game three-hitter with 14 strikeouts for Jamestown.

Liz Kammerdiener blasted a home run to power the Muskies at the plate.

BASEBALL

— Jamestown 5, Reynolds 4 — At Jamestown, one day after the Raiders picked up their first win of the season in a 9-8 decision over Jamestown, the Muskies (1-14, 1-14) captured their first win of the season against the Raiders (1-14, 1-14).

Aidan Woyt threw a complete game for the Muskies. No other Jamestown stats were reported to The Herald.

Haden Obenrader tossed a four-hitter over 5 2/3 innings for Reynolds. Ryan Broadwater also pitched. Obenrader had seven strikeouts, five walks, and gave up all five runs.

Offensively for Reynolds, P.J. Winkle singled twice and drove in a pair of runs, Nolan Reichard doubled and singled, and Luka Pantelic added two singles and an RBI.

— Grove City 5, Sharon 2 ­--- At Forese Field in Grove City, Dylan McElhinny fired a complete-game three-hitter as coach Brandon Jones' Eagles (9-5, 11-7) defeated the Tigers in Region 2 action.

Sharon (7-7, 9-8) led 2-0 before Grove City plated four runs in the fourth inning. The Eagles then tacked on a run in the sixth en route to the win.

McElhinny struck out five batters and issued one walk.

Andrew Swartfager doubled and drove in a pair of runs for Grove City, Ethan Adams singled and had an RBI, and Luke Tubbs doubled and drove in a run.

Sy Piccirilli homered and singled for Sharon, Mikey Rodriques doubled and singled, and Dante Currie was credited with an RBI.

Jason Stanek pitched 5 1/3 innings for the Tigers. He fanned one hitter, issued two walks, and gave up all five runs on only six hits.

— Brookfield 3, Lordstown 2 — At Brookfield Community Park, the Warriors opened the Div. IV Struthers District playoffs with a tight win over Lordstown.

Brookfield, which is seeded 16th, scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lordstown, seeded 20th, scored one run in the first innings and one in the fourth.

T.J. Laverty fired a four-hitter over 6 2/3 innings for Brookfield. He struck out 13 hitters and walked four.

Gavin Marsh led the Warriors at the plate with a pair of singles.

Jacob Fleming went the distance on the mound for the Red Devils. He fanned 10, issued two walks, and only surrendered six hits.

Lordstown, which only had four singles, were led at the plate by Cody Kibler, who drove in a run.

Brookfield advances to the district quarterfinals to play at Hartville-Lake Center Christian (No. 6 seed) at 5 p.m. Thursday.
