Roundup: Messner eclipses 100 career goals for Granville boys lacrosse

Granville junior Maxton Messner reached his 100th career goal Thursday night, scoring five of them as the Blue Aces crushed visiting Big Walnut 14-2 in Walter J. Hodges Stadium.

Hart Miller had four goals for the Blue Aces (5-1), while Elliott Rhoton added two and Colt Shaw, Noble Terebuh and Beckett Long also scored.

Johnnies nipped

Blake Shaub tallied three goals for Johnstown in a 7-6 overtime loss at Buckeye Valley.

McKaden Thomas added a goal and an assist for the Johnnies (1-6), while A.J. Hollis, James Swick and Jayden Byers also scored, and goalie Ben Smith had 13 saves.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Sarap impressive

Amelia Sarap scored eight goals and had an assist for visiting Granville on Thursday in a 13-12 setback against Bishop Watterson.

Kyra Studer added two goals, while Bella Rockwell and Gabby Graves also scored and goalie Grace Lily had four saves for the Blue Aces (3-1).

BASEBALL

Valley stops Heath

Host Licking Valley took advantage of seven walks issued by Heath pitching and four errors, handing the Bulldogs their first Licking County League loss 11-4 on Thursday.

Hayden Rodgers had two singles and two RBIs for the Panthers (5-1, 4-1), while Ethan Lohr also had two hits, Gunnar Bowman had an RBI and scored twice, and winning pitcher Evan Lichtenauer also had an RBI. He allowed four runs and eight hits over five innings to pick up the victory.

Hayden Woodward smacked a double and two singles for Heath (5-4, 4-1), which out-hit Valley 9-6. Losing pitcher Connor Corbett doubled and singled with an RBI, while Jacob Bunn added two singles with an RBI and Kaden Green also drove in a run.

Watkins rolling

Braiden Bates allowed one hit over five innings, with five strikeouts and two walks, as host Watkins Memorial stayed unbeaten atop the LCL-Buckeye Division with an 11-0 win against Johnstown on Thursday.

Ethan Ryan doubled and had two RBIs, scored three runs and stole two bases for the Warriors (6-4, 4-0). Sam Johnson added two singles and two RBIs, Ethan Williams a single and two RBIs, Logan Fitch knocked in a run and Chase Massie delivered a sacrifice fly.

Garrett Grinstead singled for the only hit for the Johnnies (4-4, 2-3).

Granville falls

Visiting Columbus Academy took advantage of seven Granville errors Thursday and beat the Blue Aces 15-5 in six innings.

Ezra Kurek and Sawyer Benschoter each homered for the Blue Aces (4-5), while Jacob Smith doubled and Spencer Beckett had an RBI.

GCA wins first

Andrew Benvie hit a two-run homer, double and single Thursday, driving home three runs, as visiting Granville Christian Academy put down a late Tree Of Life rally for a 14-12 Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic Conference victory.

Jayce Heisler knocked in four runs with two doubles and two singles for the Lions (1-2), while winning pitcher Bentley Johnson had two singles and two RBIs. Gabe White chased home three runs with his two hits and Wes Arnholt also had an RBI.

SOFTBALL

Newark stays hot

Brooke Nelson just missed the cycle Thursday, with a solo homer, two doubles and a single with five RBIs as visiting Newark swamped Reynoldsburg 11-2 in the Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division.

Jaylen Jackson pitched a six-hitter, striking out six with no walks, and doubled and singled with an RBI for the Wildcats (9-5), who won their fourth in the past five games. Meah Morris also doubled and singled with an RBI, while Paige Simons doubled and scored two runs, and Dez Osler and Sarah Sickels also knocked in a run.

Gerhardt stellar

Taylor Gerhardt went 4 for 4 with a triple, double and two singles, knocking in two runs, scoring three more and stealing a base Thursday as unbeaten Watkins Memorial drubbed rival Licking Heights 13-3 in the LCL-Buckeye Division.

Jordyn Wycuff added a triple and double with three RBIs for the Warriors (12-0, 3-0), while Cortney Dobbs tripled and singled with an RBI and stolen base, and Ava McKee doubled, had two sacrifice flies and drove in three runs. Maleya Thompson doubled with an RBI and Kendal Tellings went five innings to get the win.

Lily Meidl doubled and singled with two RBIs for the Hornets (6-4, 3-3), while Ava Von Bargen and Ali West also had two hits.

Vikings edged

Host Liberty Union rallied to tie it in the seventh inning Thursday and scored the winning run in the eighth of a 7-6 victory against Northridge.

Josie Van Fossen drove in two runs with a double and single for the Vikings (1-6), while Kaylee Goodwin doubled with an RBI, Lexi Thompson also doubled, and Kenzie Hannahs and Kaitlyn Angus each knocked in a run.

BOYS TENNIS

Watkins sweeps

Watkins Memorial lost only five games the entire match Thursday in a 5-0 sweep of Whitehall.

Michael Hare (6-0, 6-3), Nathan Walker (6-0, 6-0), Graham Smith (6-0, 6-0), Parker Carte-Will Strought (6-0, 6-1) and Landon Penrose-Wyatt Meade (6-1, 6-0) were all victorious for the Warriors (4-4).

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Wildcats beaten

Landon Caw had 11 assists and six digs for host Newark on Thursday in a 25-16, 25-16, 25-15 loss to Westerville South.

Reese Hartshorn had eight digs and Adrian Taylor seven for the Wildcats (1-10), and Kahne Pastorius added three blocks.
