Roundup: Newark Catholic baseball beats Berne Union in opener

Mikey Hess recorded three of the 12 hits for the Newark Catholic baseball team Monday and scored twice and drove in two runs, fueling the Green Wave in a 10-1 season-opening victory against Berne Union at Beavers Field.

Braylon Bates and Bryan McAnally each doubled and singled, and Bates and Eli Morris had two RBIs apiece for the Green Wave. Hess, Rocco Capretta and Cooper Leibas combined to scatter eight hits and strike out 10.

Nate Nemeth had four hits and scored the only run for the Rockets.

Liberty blanks GCA

Aiden Geiger struck out 11 in a five-inning no-hitter for Liberty Christian in a 10-0 season-opening victory against visiting Granville Christian.

Parker Griffin had two hits, including a double, to lead the Eagles' offense. Mason Kamppi added two hits and two runs scored, Joel Mollohan two hits and a run scored, Caleb Windle a hit and two runs scored and Oscar Walraven a hit, a run scored and an RBI.

Noah Tice allowed one hit and three unearned runs and struck out two for the Lions.

SOFTBALL

Newark rolls at Coffman

Brooke Nelson and Dez Osler combined to go 7 for 7, totaling three doubles, seven runs scored and four RBIs, powering Newark in a 14-2 victory at Dublin Coffman.

Alasandra Spears added a hit and three runs scored, Jaylen Jackson a hit and two runs scored, Chelsea Swonger a hit and two RBIs and Mallory Back a triple, a run scored and two RBIs for the Wildcats (1-1). Jackson struck out eight in three one-hit innings.

NC cruises on road

Kami Diaz, Ava Heffley and Avery Nagel each homered for Newark Catholic in a 20-0 season-opening victory at Millersport.

Heffley scored four runs and drove in three, and Diaz, Nagel and Maris Knowlton each had three RBIs with Kylie Gibson totaling a team-best three hits for the Green Wave. Veronica Bailey and Nagel each struck out five, combining for a five-inning three-hitter.

Utica wins big

Lauren Schmitt hit one of four Utica doubles, scored three runs and drove in three in a 16-5 season-opening victory against visiting Mount Gilead.

Kristen Ryan added three hits, including a double, and four RBIs, Kaitlin Evans two hits, including a double, and three runs scored, Karleigh Lees a double and three RBIs and Hannah Shaver three runs scored for Utica. Cheyenne Smith struck out six and allowed three earned runs.

Lakewood edged

A three-run walk-off home run for host Highland dropped Lakewood to a 9-7 defeat.

Audrey Thomas was 3 for 3 with two runs scored out of the leadoff spot for the Lancers (1-1). Sidney Willey and Rachel Crist each homered, totaling two hits and two RBIs apiece, and Dani Stewart and Meredith Parmer added two hits and a run scored apiece.

BOYS TENNIS

Watkins sweeps Newark

Graham Smith and Tucker Carte won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, completing Watkins Memorial's 5-0 season-opening victory against visiting Newark.

Landon Penrose and Wyatt Meade also won a double match, 6-3, 6-0, for the Warriors. Liam Grennan, 6-0, 6-0, Michael Hare, 6-0, 6-1, and Nathan Walter, 6-1, 6-3, won singles matches.
